Menai Bridge

The Menai Straits separate the isle of Anglesey from mainland Wales, and is known for its historic bridge and stunning natural beauty. The Menai Suspension Bridge, located near Bangor in North Wales, is a historic and architectural marvel connecting the island of Anglesey to the Welsh mainland. Designed by the renowned engineer Thomas Telford and completed in 1826, this bridge was the world's first major suspension bridge. It spans the Menai Strait with an impressive length of 580 feet, showcasing Telford's innovative engineering techniques. The bridge not only revolutionized transportation in the region by facilitating more efficient travel but also stands as a symbol of industrial progress. Today, it remains a vital and picturesque landmark, blending historical significance with stunning views of the surrounding natural landscape.

  • Hands down, this is THE tour guide for northern Wales.

Coming from the USA, my wife and I knew very little about the history or geography of North Wales. We shared our general interests and preferences with John in advance, allowing him to create a bespoke tour just for the two of us. He responded with an itinerary perfectly aligned with our tastes, and after a few thoughtful tweaks back and forth, he finalized a full-day experience that included a wonderful variety of elements. John picked us up at our hotel in a clean, comfortable Mercedes van, complete with water and Welsh treats. We hit it off immediately as he shared his deep love and knowledge of Wales during the drive. He even taught us a few Welsh phrases along the way—an amusing and memorable addition, especially as we struggled to pronounce them. John struck the perfect balance between historical education and engaging anecdotes, which truly enriched our experience. He is flexible, good-humored, and—most importantly—kind. During our excursion, he stopped to give an injured elderly man we encountered along the roadside a lift back to his home, something we fully supported. That simple act showed us who John really is as a person and reflected the way the Welsh look out for one another. It is a moment we will never forget. John made North Wales the highlight of our U.K. trip. If you want to experience North Wales in an immersive and meaningful way, we cannot recommend Celticos highly enough.

John was the perfect guide for our American group. His love and knowledge of Wales was boundless. Such the right balance of education/facts with letting us socialize. He was flexible and kind and always good-humored. Vehicle was clean, and we got complimentary water and Welsh treats, plus some fun sampling of the language. John made Wales the highlight of our U.K. tour. We all want to visit again!

I did a two-day tour with John. We arrived in Wales via ferry from Ireland, and he helped me find the ferry that worked best with our tour schedule. He picked us up at Holyhead Port and drove us to Southampton, England. He worked with me to create an itinerary that best fit my needs. I wanted to see historical sites and must-see places, and John delivered. He created a memorable itinerary that felt more like a road. One that I will never forget! We saw two castles, charming villages, a few UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and many other beautiful places. John also took us to a sheep farm, which was one of my favorite stops—I still think about it often! I highly recommend this company to anyone visiting Wales and England. John is amazing—kind, patient, and very knowledgeable.

The guide services provided by John Pritchard with Celticos Tours exceeded our expectations. John's knowledge of the north coast of Wales is extensive and his family history in the area adds color and a depth to understanding in getting to know its people and culture. John is polite, fun, accommodating, and generous with his special treats (e.g., Welsh cakes) along the way. John fulfilled all of our requests with ease. Even checked us into our hotel (along with our luggage) while we grabbed lunch. Big kudos to John.

John was flexible in organizing our private tour (shore excursion) of Anglesey. At our request, he took us to the Bryn Celli Ddu burial site, the Penrhos Feilw Standing Stones and the Ty Mawr hut circles on Holyhead Mountain. John was punctual, courteous, informative, professional yet friendly and an enjoyable guide with whom to spend the day. He also shared with us his favourite sites in Anglesey such as the Snowdonia National Park and Cwn Idwal, which were magnificent. We were able to see Anglesey through John's eyes, as his love for this part of the world was communicated to us. it was an 8 hour tour but we were back in time before the ship sailed. Dally and Sue

Wow! Stop scrolling for guides and book John directly! I was fortunate to find John who expertly put together a custom first time visit to Wales tour with a special emphasis on my family ancestry. I was short on time (just one day), and John not only brought the local knowledge, language and expertise, but the energy to cover over 200 miles to visit a wide variety of spots from castles, to cultural icons, to natural wonders, cute villages and local food specialties. John also squeezed in sites relevant to my ancestry, even texting along the way a genealogy colleague who provided a missing piece to the puzzle! John is charismatic, funny and an excellent guide. Flexible and imaginative all along the way. He was still sending me ideas of things to do the next day! I couldn't have been more thrilled with the experience in John's capable hands. Entrusting someone out of the blue with such an important experience can be stressful - but I will be back one day and John is my first call. Don't hesitate! Thank you John for making my trip so memorable!
