  • Be aware of moon phase

Our guide was very informative but the experience was not very good as it was a night with a full moon. I am surprised they even sell tickets when they are aware in advance of the particular phase of the moon. No more stars visible then if I was in a big city with lights

  • Better than the observatory!!!

We were in Tekapo for 2 nights. The first night was with the observatory. This 2nd evening of stargazing with the Silver River was 100% better! They offered coats and then about 20 people piled into the 4x4 van. We went out into the night, bumping away in the ride. I had no idea where they were taking us, but when we arrived about 10 mins away, we were divided into 2 smaller groups. There were haystacks to help with the wind and divided the 2 groups. Comfortable camp chairs arranged around a telescope. The guide was a young man, and he was quite knowledgeable and entertaining. We learned about the area and did a Q&A. Groups of 2/3 went up to view the telescope so we weren't all crowded. He asked us what we were most interested in seeing though the telescope, and we saw the moon and the Magellanic Clouds. It was incredible that we could see the Magellanic Clouds since it was only the night after a full moon. He took photos of each group at the end. I only wished we could have had some time to take photos on our own. The area we were in felt like we were on another planet. It was away from everything, and any town lights were hidden behind the hills. Perfect place! Great staff! Amazing views!

  • Exceeded our expectations!

The weather in Tekapo was really cloudy and overcast. At check in, we were given a couple choices (move to a later time, another day, go ahead and give it a go, or get a full refund). Despite the clouds, we decided to go ahead with the tour. We are so glad we did. Clouds had moved and experience was better than we thought. Our guide Tamir was knowledgeable, funny and helpful. Would highly recommend this trip. It definitely exceeded our expectations.

We had an amazing evening with Kira as our guide. She picked us up from our accommodation and drove us to a farm (only 4 of us in total) where we were extremely lucky (given the cloudy forecast) to have largely clear skies. We learnt a huge amount from Kira who is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about space. We got an amazing photo of us in front of the Milky Way as well as some delicious snacks and a hot drink, we could see a lot with the naked eye but also looked at lots through the telescope. This was a very personal feeling tour unlike some of the more well known alternatives. Highly recommend- it was a brilliant experience.

We had amazing skies and our guide Evan was incredibly energetic and educational. He knew so much about the skies and taught us with a laser pointer. He also has one of the best laughs I’ve ever heard in my life.

Still awaiting a refund that was promised to us on the night of the trip due to weather. Saw the moon for about 20 seconds all night.

We really enjoyed our evening with Jamie and Kira’s expertise. Jamie was keen to show us a cool trick for iPhone stargazing photography, and Kira was great in answering off the cuff questions, which we thought was a great and displayed the depth of knowledge the guides possessed!

  • It was an excellent...

It was an excellent experience. The stars and constellations were very well explained, watching the stars through the telescope was surreal! A highly recommended activity, especially if you are visiting from the northern hemisphere because the sky is quite different down south!
