Fort Jesus Museum
Pick up from your hotel/port at 8 am and proceed to Fort Jesus built by the Portuguese in the 16th Century. The site chosen was a coral ridge at the entrance to the harbor and was built to secure the safety of Portuguese living on the East Coast of Africa. It has had a long history of hostilities of the interested parties that used to live in Mombasa. Omani Arabs attacked the Fort from 1696 to 1698. Between 1837 and 1895, the Fort was used as barracks for the soldiers. When the British protectorate was proclaimed on the 1st of July 1895, the Fort was converted into a prison. The Fort is now an important historical landmark in the East African region.

Do it! Athumani (driver/guide) and Joseph (guide) provided us a great day…very kind, nice guys…gave us just enough insight to make everything interesting, and not too much as to overwhelm us…as tour guides can sometimes do. Very cool about letting us take our time to enjoy the things we liked, and willing to speed along if we’d had enough of something. Just my wife and I….stopped for a nice lunch as well. Everywhere we went we felt very safe and looked after. Couldn’t have been better hosts of Mombasa. Enjoyed old town, the woodworking factory, Fort Jesus, the “Tusks” for some quick pictures, and Haller park for giraffe and hippo feeding was cool. The hippo’s just eat pellets, not that exciting, but being 20 from them (fenced) is still a kick. Luckily we had a lot of schoolkids around for the giraffe feeding, which was quite good fun to watch.
