Well-developed and centrally located as a landing point between Colombo and the tea cultivating hinterland of the island, Kandy became synonymous with tea production in Sri Lanka during the height of the British rule. The second biggest city on the island, Kandy was an obvious choice for an administrative capital for the tea region, with the British-built railway network further facilitating this. Towards the end of the 19th Century, the city of Kandy was so popular with tea planters and their visiting families that two grand hotels were built here – the Hotel Suisse and the Queen’s Hotel. Tea production brought tourism into Kandy and it has continued to do so for the past two centuries. It is therefore impossible to visit Kandy without giving some recognition to the tea industry and its effect on the global market, on the little island of Sri Lanka and especially on the bustling city of Kandy. Take some time to visit the Kadugannawa tea factory just a short drive from Kandy to learn about tea cultivation, production and distribution.

Our holiday was superbly handled by car driver Upul Sangeeth who was with us throughout the 7 day trip. The remarkable point was his determination and planning to make our trip a grand success. He adjusted our travel plans to add more sites and ensured that these remain cost effective. We wen to Dambulla Cave temple and got stranded due to heavy rains. Upul climbed all the 385 stairs and brought us umbrellas as a very thoughtful gesture. Hire him for a scintillating Sri Lanka tour.

We had an amazing time touring Sri Lanka with Dhanuka from Hellow Travel. Everything was extremely well organised and they made an extra big effort throughout the tour to make sure everywhere was as special as it could be for us. The sights we saw were incredible and Dhanuka was extremely knowledgeable on the history and significance of the sights we saw. He also provided us with lots of local insights as we drove to all the places we visited across Sri Lanka. And most importantly we all shared a lot of laughs and good times together! A truly memorable experience!

Sigiriya Rock, Safari and Sri Lankan people were nice and nice smiling. At first I was not particularly keen on hearing about the trip to Sri Lanka, but when I came I was glad to see that I had signed a letter confirming that the beautiful nature and kind people, a little spicy but delicious curry and fruit, were different from my image. It is a country I would like to visit again. It was a memorable and enjoyable trip, with Mr Danuka the hallo traveller who arranged it this time and Mr Denny the driver also listening to all our requests. It's a country I want to come back to.
