Experience the Japanese ink-wash painting technique of Suiboku-ga in a relaxing and comfortable environment while enjoying Japanese green tea during this hour-long workshop. Suiboku-ga is a form of Sumi-e ink painting which uses washes of ink to create texture and contrast and is one of the only types of painting styles that does not use numerous layers of paint. Suiboku-ga is said to be a painting technique from the heart, as its simplicity allows one's heart to be reflected directly in the painting. It is filled with the Japanese aesthetic sense and spirituality. In this workshop, you will learn the basic techniques of Suiboku-ga and embrace Zen spirit. This introductory course puts you the student under the tutelage of award-winning artist Rensui, who will teach simple methods of painting, such as finishing with a single brushstroke. At booking, you will get to choose which object you'd like to paint on, so get ready to move that brush. Your finished work will become a souvenir to take home or give as a gift to friends and family. A theme will be chosen from one of the following types of paintings: pine, bamboo, plum, orchid, chrysanthemum, and Chinese "kanji" characters.

The teacher is patient and clear, encouraging a relaxed experience even while imparting important basic techniques that can be used later. She has an excellent sense of design that helps students to understand how to improve their work within the context of traditional Sumi-e style. I enjoyed this introduction while deepening my understanding and achieving a better result than I anticipated. Highly recommend.

Our host was very kind and sweet. After our class we had two free cups of tea, matcha and hojicha. We also got a free little gift from the tea shop which was so sweet. Our class was just the two of us so it was hands on and we could ask lots of questions. Our host is very positive and encouraged us! Thank you for having us!
