Experience our new spooky nighttime treasure hunt for a frighteningly fun evening! Use our lanterns and other tools to search for buried treasure while encountering a ghost of piracy past. We have partnered with Virgin Islands Eco Tours to provide your crew kayaks and a guide to explore the eerie St. Thomas mangroves to find clues during the adventure. Also take in the scenic sunset while experiencing a significant historical monument in Bluebeards Castle and the historical artifacts on display.

Imagine the best of an escape room (solving clues as a group) but rather be stuck in one room, the island becomes your boundaries on a 4 to 5 hour adventure! This experience is 18 and up due to the spooky nature of the experience. No refunds will be given due to “scare factor” or the intensity of the attraction.

Private groups only with at least 6 people to reserve the experience for your party. For smaller private groups please check out our other popular treasure hunts.

Although you will not have to swim, you will be tandem kayaking for approximately 40 minutes round-trip.

The Ghosts of Piracy Past is designed to be a spooky and immersive experience. It will be dark, and at one point during the experience you will be in tight quarters in a wooded outdoor area. Strobe lights and other disorienting props may be used. Live actors may spook you in various ways but will not touch your person or belongings.

If you are afraid of heights the sky ride is 700 feet above sea level. You may sit out during that portion of the treasure hunt.

Cancellation Policy

For a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time.

Clients will enjoy an appetizer at the end of the experience. Snacks such as fruit snacks and oatmeal bars are included. Please eat dinner ahead of time.

Pirate gear including hats and eye patches to get in the spirit are included.

Use our Tropical Treasure Hunt adventure pack which includes tools to assist with solving clues during the adventure.

Dinner is not included with the experience.

Use of Snorkelling equipment

Bug spray. On the mangroves there can be mosquitoes and other insects. Please plan accordingly.

A treasure (gift) is not included at the conclusion. For private groups clients can purchase a gift.

Towels will not be provided. You will get wet on the kayak excursion and will need a towel.

What To Expect

Clients will enjoy a night tandem kayak tour with a Eco Tours guide in the spooky St. Thomas mangroves. Visit it a small island to collect the next clue. Be careful, a ghost of piracy past may be lurking in the darkness. We can't provide all of the locations you will visit since part of the adventure is figuring out the next location based on the riddles provided.

Bluebeard's Tower

Clients will experience a historical monument in the Bluebeards Tower built in the late 1600s by the Danes as a way to protect the island from enemy countries and pirates! The inside of the castle is now a small museum with amazing artifacts including some from the Golden Age of Piracy (approx. 1650 - 1725). You will have an experienced guide help you understand the history of St. Thomas while taking in panoramic, incredible views from the top of the tower during sunset. You will receive your first clue in the museum along with your adventure bag with tools to solve clues throughout the night including a lantern. The clue will have you use the historical artifacts to solve the riddles that will lead you on your spooky adventure!

The Halloween theme hunt was informative and fun. We had such a great time. I was worth every minute. Transportation and refreshments was provided to the different location. The view on top of the castle was breathtaking. 15 out of 10.

This treasure hunt was so much fun. We definitely would consider doing more if we had the time. We chose this specific one for the admission into the pirate museum, and because we have little ones and were unsure how hard the tasks would be. The kids loved the hunt and said it was one of the best things of the whole trip. The guide will help direct you, but lets your family enjoy and figure out the task on your own. You get a walkie-talkie if you need hints and they check in time to time. We were able to figure out the clues with no hints and still look around the museum a little. Once we figured out where the treasure was buried, they personally take you there (or you can follow in your own car), and transport you back. They also give you the chance to pay extra for a pirate actor if available. We had Goldilocks and he was amazing. He was so wonderful with the kids and he taught us a lot of the history of the island. He was an excellent addition to the experience!

We took the Ghost of Piracy Past tour with my 3 teenage boys. I won’t spoil anything, but it included an indoor escape room, and kayaking through the mangroves at night in search of clues to ultimately find the treasure. We had a great time with Anthony and although there were a few minor snafus on our hunt that Anthony couldn’t control, we had a great time and solved the mystery without any help. It was great having the whole family work together and enjoy each other’s company on the 5 hour tour. I highly recommend!

We did this treasure hunt while on vacation in St. Thomas and it was so much fun! They pick you up and take you to each stop, it included pizza and two drinks per person, and there was a 30 min escape room. The kids loved finding clues and piecing then together to find the buried treasure! There was an unexpected kayaking trip to a haunted island and the guide there was great!! We have kids ages 21-7 and there was something for each of them. Highly recommend!!! Only constructive criticism is it was a long venture (5.5 hrs) and it was advertised as serving "dinner" which was only a pizza. Other than that, Anthony and his team were great!

This was definitely the highlight of our trip. Anthony was beyond amazing at curating the most fun experience for us. We got to see some really cool parts of the island and hear about the history of the pirates that once sailed these seas. Do not miss out on this. You really cannot go wrong with this treasure hunt.

What an awesomely fun evening! We had a group of adults, mostly related to each other (grown children, spouses, close family friends, etc.) We started with a very informative walk through the museum at Bluebeards Castle, with an incredibly knowledgeable local guide. Anyone interested in history at all would find this part of the event very fascinating. We all learned quite a bit about STT history. About the puzzle, the clues and props were well put together, challenging without being impossible, and fun to work on with a group. I especially appreciated that the props were sturdy enough to work with, and not prone to falling apart when we looked at them. The adventure took us across the island and into several local places that we had either not visited before, or not really explored before. With the incentive to look for clues within the businesses, we enjoyed exploring these places more than we otherwise would have -- but we will be back to several of them! I can't believe how much we had been missing! The paddle out through the mangroves was very cool after dark. We had a slight difficulty the first time we tried to go, as there was a lightning storm, and we (our guide, us, and the people at EcoTours all talked to each other about the decision) decided for safety reasons not to get onto the water at that time. So we actually ended up spreading our adventure across two nights, which could have been terrible, but was in fact a really good choice for us. We loved the good communication throughout the experience, both before, during, and after our adventure. We really appreciated how Anthony and his crew worked together to be sure that our experience was everything it needed to be. No spoilers here, but do expect some jump scares! :-) It was exactly the right amount of spooky/scary for us, not too intense, but plenty of adrenaline for those who need it. We will definitely be back to do some of the other adventures from this company. Highly recommended.

Great fun! Our group of 3 couples were able to find the clues and solve the puzzle to find the treasure. We started off at Bluebeards Castle with a lively bit of history and a close look at the real treasures that have been found near there. The view from the top was amazing. Then we followed the clues to drinks and then adventure on the kayak tour. We got out of the kayaks and walked through the mangroves to find a pirate and a few crabs and some scary characters. ( be sure you have applied loads of bug spray before getting in the kayaks) Next we took the van to our Secret location for pizza ( delicious) and another round of drinks before the search on the beach for buried treasure. The creepy ghostly pirates tried to keep us from stealing their treasure. And scared the p… out of me! It was a fun evening. It took over 6 hours , which was my only complaint. We were never bored, but it did take longer than I expected, making for a very late return to our boat

It was great fun! As first time visitors to St Thomas we loved that we got to explore different cool spots and activities across the Island and have have a few drinks along the way! Our guide Ryan was really attentive and accommodating to our needs. He made sure it was a smooth transition between all of our activities.
