John was so entertaining and informative - we loved his tour! Actually, we did 2 tours with him; the outside Medieval Mile walking tour, AND the indoor museum tour. He is such an engaging and lively guide, full of fascinating information and stories that really bring medieval times alive. I highly recommend doing both tours!

For such a seemingly small museum, we received a wealth of knowledge from our tour guide Lynn. She was a great guide who was passionate about the history of the museum and the town of Kilkenny in general! She also gave us great recommendations for other places to visit while in town.

Very thorough and well presented account of the local history here. I for some reason believed the tour to be a walking tour of the city, but upon closer inspection, realized it was a museum. Not sure how that happened, but want to make sure no one else mistakenly thinks its a walking tour of the town. The guides were very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and kind.

Hidden away down St Mary’s Lane off Kilkenny’s High Street the Medieval Mile Museum is a treasure trove of early and medieval maps, artefacts and stone masonry that speaks to the historical importance of the city - within Ireland but also Europe. We would count among its major treasures John Halpin, tour guide extraordinaire. After many years in the US he returned to his roots and has made a second career of introducing visitors to his home town’s extraordinary past. Starting off in the museum, we then worked our way along the Medieval Mile, with John regaling us with stories of witches, wars, merchants, disgruntled bishops and famous as well as infamous sons and daughters of this incredibly charming and atmospheric small city. We felt transported back in time and would do it again to hear John’s stories all over again.
