Barracuda Biking Company
We meet at 7:30am to begin our once in a lifetime journey. We hop aboard our private transport en route to La Cumbre at 4700m. Once there, we get all our gear (helmets, gloves, knee/elbow pads, pants/jacket) and our top of the line bikes (Kona Full Suspension bikes with hydraulic disk brakes). Our bikes are maintained after every ride and we have over 100 bikes in our shop, ensuring you will get a bike that has been serviced and is adequate to your height. Also, the brakes are on the side you want them (different countries use different sides for the front/rear brake and you wouldn't want to grab the wrong brake because it's not set for your country). Our guides have an average of 10 years experience guiding on this incredible road. They give you detailed instructions before we start the ride to help keep you safe and comfortable on our descent. After our safety induction, we begin our ride. The first 24km of the ride are on the tarmac, this is a great chance for you to get a feel for your bike and the brakes and if you're up for it get some speed. The incredible andes show their splendor as we wind our way through this spectacular valley, taking small stops to catch the views and so the guides can explain upcoming sections. Eventually we arrive at Unduavi where every rider has to pay a road tax. Here we load up our bikes and do a big uphill on the bus. The bus arrives to the top of the old road, known as Death Road. Your guides will give you a safety briefing and check all the bikes. The barren snow capped mountains we have passed by are long gone and we are now in the incredible cloud forest. We literally start above the clouds, then ride through and out of them into the lush jungle. The last 40km of our ride are out of this world, as we curve our way down an incredible road carved out of the side of the andes, passing through waterfalls, rivers, small communities, down, down, down to the steaming jungle. The views of the valley are breathtaking and the rush of adrenaline and pure fun are incomparable. We have several stops along the way to take in the views and for our safety briefings. This is important so that you know about any corners or tricky sections of the road before you arrive and so that the guides can answer any questions, tell some jokes and give you some of the fascinating history of this road. We stop twice to refresh ourselves with a well earned snack and there is unlimited water provided during the ride. We end the ride at our jungle refuge where we enjoy a delicious buffet, a dip in the pool and relaxation. There are also hot showers and soap/shampoo/towels for you. After relaxing and celebrating our amazing ride, we hop in the bus for our 3.5 hour ride back to La Paz, where we will be dropped off near our hotels. Many people say this is the best experience of their south America trip, make sure you do it safely with a reputable company who focuses on giving you an amazing ride.

They were great but their knee pads are so old that the Velcro doesn’t work and the pads don’t stay in place. I fractured my tibia on this bc I ended up taking the knee pads off (as the Velcro wasn’t working anyways) and slipped on a wet rock.. really old Bikes. Nice beautiful road.

Great experience with Barracuda! It is a very safe agency: bikes are in good shape, the guides know the safety rules and make sure we apply them. We were also able to ask for additional (elbow/knee) pads to protect ourselves, although it wasn't necessary because no one fell. Food was good. Perhaps we could have made some more stops to enjoy the view, but that's a personal point of view. Overall, our experience was great and we do recommend. Big thank you to the guide!

Remi and Claudio are exceptional guides...very attentive and serious. The explanations are clear and always given with a smile. Great experience thanks to both of them...not to mention our driver.

This is a must do if you visit La Paz. It is not easy or for the feint of heart, but it is beautiful, fun and exhilarating. Our “most beautiful Barracuda guides”, Remy and Cesar were outstanding, they were very focussed on our safety, explained everything really well, and they ensured we were looked after the whole day. They made the whole day fun for our family and they cared equally for everyone in our group. They included everyone and worked hard to create a bond within our group so we had fun as a group. Remy and his team (Cesar and our 2 drivers), deserve 11 stars out of 10! Nothing but good things to say about Barracuda and our guides. I will recommend this company and adventure to anyone coming to La Paz.

It was really an amazing experience. I came with no expectations, but it turned out being one of my favorite experiences in Bolivia and Peru. The bikes (all suspension) had a good quality and very good breaks. Cristian and Alvaro, our tour guides, did a great job, explained a lot and took care of everyone. The group size on that day was pretty small (7 people) and the weather fantastic. I can defenitly recommend it.
