What To Expect

Barracuda Biking Company

We meet at 7:30am to begin our once in a lifetime journey. We hop aboard our private transport en route to La Cumbre at 4700m. Once there, we get all our gear (helmets, gloves, knee/elbow pads, pants/jacket) and our top of the line bikes (Kona Full Suspension bikes with hydraulic disk brakes). Our bikes are maintained after every ride and we have over 100 bikes in our shop, ensuring you will get a bike that has been serviced and is adequate to your height. Also, the brakes are on the side you want them (different countries use different sides for the front/rear brake and you wouldn't want to grab the wrong brake because it's not set for your country). Our guides have an average of 10 years experience guiding on this incredible road. They give you detailed instructions before we start the ride to help keep you safe and comfortable on our descent. After our safety induction, we begin our ride. The first 24km of the ride are on the tarmac, this is a great chance for you to get a feel for your bike and the brakes and if you're up for it get some speed. The incredible andes show their splendor as we wind our way through this spectacular valley, taking small stops to catch the views and so the guides can explain upcoming sections. Eventually we arrive at Unduavi where every rider has to pay a road tax. Here we load up our bikes and do a big uphill on the bus.   The bus arrives to the top of the old road, known as Death Road. Your guides will give you a safety briefing and check all the bikes. The barren snow capped mountains we have passed by are long gone and we are now in the incredible cloud forest. We literally start above the clouds, then ride through and out of them into the lush jungle.  The last 40km of our ride are out of this world, as we curve our way down an incredible road carved out of the side of the andes, passing through waterfalls, rivers, small communities, down, down, down to the steaming jungle. The views of the valley are breathtaking and the rush of adrenaline and pure fun are incomparable. We have several stops along the way to take in the views and for our safety briefings. This is important so that you know about any corners or tricky sections of the road before you arrive and so that the guides can answer any questions, tell some jokes and give you some of the fascinating history of this road. We stop twice to refresh ourselves with a well earned snack and there is unlimited water provided during the ride. We end the ride at our jungle refuge where we enjoy a delicious buffet, a dip in the pool and relaxation. There are also hot showers and soap/shampoo/towels for you. After relaxing and celebrating our amazing ride, we hop in the bus for our 3.5 hour ride back to La Paz, where we will be dropped off near our hotels.   Many people say this is the best experience of their south America trip, make sure you do it safely with a reputable company who focuses on giving you an amazing ride.

It was an amazing experience overall, we drove to the top of the mountains where you started in the snow, and hours later ended in the jungle with a pool to relax. The guides were very helpful, explained everything and let everyone go on their own pace. We got some good snacks on the way which was great, dinner was also sooo yummy. I would only comment that breakfast was not very much. Overall definitely recommend if you like adrenaline

The experience was amazing, the views and the thrill. Experience with mountain biking would make the experience less painful, but you don't need any. The guide Remi was fantastic and made me feel like our safety was his top priority and really explained well everything and created a fun environment. He was very eager to help anyone who needed anything of service and was just a really kind person. The snacks, food and water were perfect. We took ample breaks. My only feedback would be that I didn't feel safe at certain points and was by myself cycling past dangerous parts because the others in the group were far ahead after I took a fall. Both times I fell, there was no guides available . There was supposed to be a guide who followed the back but he always sped ahead or didn't really seem to take much care after I fell the first time. I think there should have been one more guide. I did say this to Remi afterwards and he really tried to take care and offer help , but I don't think it was his fault. Overall, I know the guides are very well trained and we're making sure our bikes were safe throughout the trip. I would recommend them.

Christian and Rubén were amazing guides, extremely funny and kind! We had the best time riding with them and were safe all the time. We were jamming to music on the way up and down and had fun joking around with them. Nevertheless they were extremely professional and took great care of us and gave us great safety instruction, I would love to ride with them again! They are doing the death road nearly everyday and still manage to have fun with us and show us a great time :))
