It is a representative temple of the Silla Dynasty, founded in 751 (10th year of King Gyeongdeok’s reign) by Kim Dae-seong. However, according to the “Bulguksa Gogeumchanggi,” “the year after Ichadon was martyred, in 528 (15th year of King Beopheung’s reign), King Beopheung’s mother, Lady Yeongje, and Lady Giyun founded this temple and became a nun.” Bulguksa is the Buddhist land that the Silla people longed for, the ideal world of peace. The Silla people’s desire for the Buddhist land is expressed here in three aspects. One is the Saha world of Sakyamuni Buddha based on the Lotus Sutra, the other is the Paradise of Amitabha Buddha based on the Infinite Life Sutra, and the other is the Lotus World of Vairocana Buddha based on the Avatamsaka Sutra. These three are each expressed in their own unique way through the overall composition of a section centered on the Daeungjeon, another section centered on the Geungnakjeon, and the Birojeon.
Gyeongju National Museum
The Gyeongju National Museum is Korea's premier museum, offering a comprehensive overview of Silla's cultural heritage. Here, visitors can explore the condensed history of the millennium-long Silla Kingdom, which lasted from 57 BC to 935 AD. Notably, visitors can see the authentic Silla Golden Crown, crafted 1,500 years ago. Visiting Gyeongju as your first stop before exploring the historic site will enhance your experience. You can witness the historical flow of Silla, its splendid art and culture, and its relics. The outdoor exhibition hall showcases over 1,300 stone artifacts, including temple bells, stone pagodas, stone Buddhas, stone lanterns, and stone pedestals.

We really enjoyed our private tour with Mr. Jang. It was great to cover both cities in 1 day, since we didn't have much time in Busan. Mr. Jang reached out to coordinate with us before the tour & even arranged a 1 hour night fireworks yacht tour for us, which we couldn't have done on our own due to the language barrier. We enjoyed seeing the sights of Gyeongju and Busan and getting Mr. Jang's insights on the sights and their history as well as the great photos he took for us at each stop. Mr. Jang coordinated all the logistics & drove us so we could relax and take in the sights. A couple notes: we had a slight language barrier, but Mr Jang worked to make sure we understood and the sights in Busan and Gyeongu are spread apart, so there is significant driving time, however the itinerary is planned with an efficient driving route in mind.

We enjoyed our tour with Mr Jang. He was very informative about culture and history about Korea. I thought I knew a lot about Korea but some of his facts were so interesting that I wanted to AI fact check to get even more info. We got in all the sites he listed and think the tour was worth what we paid. in order to get to Gyeongju the drive was over an hour but was expected. It was worth it. It did rain sometimes and Mr. Jang was concerned but we didn't care much so we still really enjoyed our tour.

We recently got back from South Korea, where four of us had the privilege of being guided by Jang on this incredible tour. It is certainly a busy day, but well worth it to experience some of Korea's old history with the Shilla dynasty. Gyeongju was awe inspiring - the Buddhist temple is huge and beautiful, and it seems you can't walk far without stumbling into a burial mound (and can even go into one). Plus the Korean barbecue spot he took us to was absolutely delicious. Then we toured some of Busan's beauty, highlighted by looking down on the city, which Jang managed to time perfectly to see right at sunset. He even took us on a bonus stop to see some of Busan's film history. Throughout it all, Jang was very enjoyable and informative, giving us context on everything we saw and making recommendations to personalize our experience. He even taught us the way Koreans drink soju (which would've been helpful a few days earlier!). Absolutely recommend Jang in general and this tour specifically.

If you have 4-5 people in your group, this is better way to travel. We were able to see the city in short time and our guide made it easier for us to be picked up and dropped off easily.

Our guide Jane was very good and took time to explain the history of all the dynasties and significance of each of the temples or palaces we visited, he also showed us places which were not on our itenary but since we had some time left he wanted us to experience the Busan completely
