Užupis, district in Vilnius, separated from the Old Town by the Vilnelė River. Once a troubled area in the early 1990s, Užupis has blossomed into a vibrant neighborhood of artists, intellectuals, and entrepreneurs. On April 1, 1997, the residents whimsically declared independence, creating their own republic complete with its own currency, anthem, and constitution, embodying a truly free spirit. Crossing the river of Vilnelė'the best way to enter and discover this bohemian enclave.

5.00I wasn't sure what to expect when I signed up for this experience. I had never taken a river hike before and I am not a big water person. However, as soon as I met Violeta I knew I was in good hands. She made the group feel at ease, and shortly into the hike we felt like friends sharing this wonderful time together. The views were amazing, the water was refreshingly cool and It allowed us to appreciate a great city from a couple different point of view. I highly recommend this experience to anyone that enjoys being outdoors, making new friends and learning more about Vilnius and Lithuania.
