What To Expect

Bimmah Sinkhole

Long attributed to a meteorite, this beautiful swimming hole is actually a naturally occurring sinkhole. Sinkholes are often the result of groundwater eating away at rocks like limestone and carbonate. Caverns form as the rocks dissolve, and eventually the ground above caves in, sometimes taking cars, houses, and even the occasional pizza place with it. In Northern Oman, just off the road between Dibab and Bimmah, there’s a particularly beautiful example of the natural phenomena. In an otherwise flat area, a sinkhole formed about a third of a mile from the sea, resulting in a turquoise mix of fresh and salt water.

Wadi Shab is a very popular wadi located in the Al Sharqiyah Region in Oman. It is a very popular outdoor attraction for both locals and expats, and people come here for the nature, to swim in the fresh water pools. The main attraction of the wadi is the water fall in the cave, which you can reach after a roughly 40 mins hike and swimming in 2-3 pools

It was so majestic and amazing seeing wonders that hidden in the valley. The water were so greenish and bluish that represents goddess of the nature.

It exceeded my expectations. Make sure to have reef walker slip ons as there is algae and moss along the entire route in the water which makes getting your footing tricky when trying to stand up in the shallow water. If you're not a strong swimmer, do rent a lifejacket . Also, the stone/rocky surface on the foot path is smooth which makes trekking a bit tricky. The topography is breathtakingly beautiful. The contrast between the green flora below against the backdrop of the brown canyon mountains is incredible . The entire tour lasted approximately 10 hours. Our tour guide Abid was excellent, knowledgeable and attentive. He out on quite the show for us at the watering hole and led us through narrow passages leading into a cave. Great experience. Crowds were moderate, but movement through the entire trail was assured.

We had a wonderful experience visiting Wadi Shab and the Bimmah Sinkhole in Oman, thanks to our guide Abid. He was very friendly right from the start and made the entire trip smooth and stress-free. Abid guided us through everything really well, made sure we were comfortable at all times, and even got us snacks, which was a thoughtful touch. Wadi Shab was absolutely beautiful with its clear pools and scenic hike, and the Sinkhole was equally stunning. Overall, a great experience and highly recommend Abid as a guide if you’re visiting Oman!

Thanks to our super guide Abid, we had a great day at wadi shab: walking and swimming in this beautiful environment combining oasis and canyon. To do leaving early enough to avoid the hordes (ideally start at 9:30). There is a 45/50 minute walk almost flat to access the swimming area. However, you need good sneakers because stony and slippery and slippers to go in the water (it slips too!!) . The water is very clear, delicious and refreshing because it is hot, even on Christmas Day. Swimming up the stream (no current) in successive swimming pools. Already then in a small restaurant simple but very good then stop back to see this very original sinkhole where the water is 20 meters below. Possibility to swim there (easy stair access) but no interest after wadi shab. It’s really good to do all this with a guide like Abid who knows the good parts.
