Thousands of Years in the Making a Wonderland of Stunning Geothermal Activity. The technical description for this remarkable place is that it’s part of an 18-sq. km active geothermal park at the northern perimeter of the Reporoa Caldera (a collapsed volcanic crater) formed 230,000 years ago within the Taupo Volcanic Zone. The ‘wow’ factor is much in evidence at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, the place we love to share with visitors from all corners of the globe. We loved our visit there. We were early enough to see the Lady Knox geyser presentation which went well. The parking and traffic control was well organised. We enjoyed walking around the geothermal park which was huge and there was a lot to see. The day was misty and foggy so we couldn't see all of the champagne lake but that wasn't a huge issue. We did the 3 routes which can be hard going and you need a moderate level of fitness. It is best to go around when there are less crowds so you get the full effect of the noises and thermal activity. We thoroughly enjoyed our day. The mud pools on the way back to the highway were amazing and free of charge to visit.

What a beautiful & powerful thermal park worth the ticket & visit! We loved the super smooth organised entry with a seamless check in/ticketing (even on a very busy day) The entire park has very easy to follow trail markers & a map that shows you all the spots to check out. Our time in the area brought rain & fog but that didn’t spoil the fun! All the thermal activity was visible (and very active during rainy weather!) Added bonus- it appears the rain cuts down on the sulfur smell that everyone seems to complain about in other reviews because we didn’t smell it at all when there on a rainy day! So if the smells bother you a maybe a rainy day is for you! The views! The colors! The power! This thermal park just shows you how majestic & powerful Mother Nature is as you walk around! We wanted to see ALL the spots so we made sure to follow each trail to hit up all the spots. Make sure to follow each trail & experience all the spots. The colors, textures & activity change at each thermal spot so your eyes get many amazing views. Don’t forget to stop in the gift shop on the way out. They have so much amazing stuff to get!

A large number of people turn out for the timed geyser experience but it is not that impressive in size or time of eruption. The walk around the park is much more interesting overall and the champagne lake is quite extraordinary.

This geyser presentation was completely useless. I’m offended that we paid for this.

Amazing geothermal site! The hike to see the different parts of the park was three connected trails which brought you to the most amazing pools. The main trail is the most accessible but trails 2 and 3 were fine for people of moderate ability. Definitely worth seeing all of it!

We only allotted about two hours for this attraction and you could easily spend an entire day at the site. Lots of cool volcanic features springs, geysers, mud pots. Nice walkway well done exhibits.

A lot of the focus on the Lady Knox Geyser (reviewed separately) overshadows the really beautiful Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland which was much more interesting. There are craters, mud pools, colourful terraces and forested areas. The Champagne pool is magnificent - a steaming, colourful hot water pool with bubbles (hence the name). Roto Karikitea was a beautifully green pool when we visited (they say it depends on the day). As a LOTR fan the Rua Pumahu crater mud pool had the sounds which created the Foley sounds for Mordor. There is so much to see! Everything is well signposted. We visited at 8:30am and had a chance to do walks 1 & 2 (2 km, 60 mins) but missed out on walk 3 (an extra 1 km and 30 mins) because we wanted to see the Lady Knox Geyser. Since we missed out on good seating anyway I would recommend doing walk 3 as well and getting to the Lady Knox Geyser later. You could, of course, do Lady Knox Geyser first which many people do. Looking at the traffic we saw leaving for there after Lady Knox Geyser we think our earlier walks were probably a lot quieter. It is not worthwhile coming back to do walk 3 after the geyser as you have to complete walks 1 & 2 again.
