Thousands of Years in the Making a Wonderland of Stunning Geothermal Activity. The technical description for this remarkable place is that it’s part of an 18-sq. km active geothermal park at the northern perimeter of the Reporoa Caldera (a collapsed volcanic crater) formed 230,000 years ago within the Taupo Volcanic Zone. The ‘wow’ factor is much in evidence at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, the place we love to share with visitors from all corners of the globe. Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland ‘one of the most surreal places on earth’ so naturally it’s high on the list of Rotorua’s must-see attractions. I was a bit disappointed on the mediocrity of this place. Geysers were a rarity even if u experience one. It mostly consisted of sink holes spewing cloud of sulfur. There were couple of pools that showed some colors but mostly bland. My review is based on the fact that I have seen much better in other parts of the world. My biggest disappointment was Lady Know Geyser. It was not even natural. It was artificially created by dumping soap etc. to force water from the vent hole at precisely 10:15 am. Natural Geysers sprout with an approximate intervals through out the day. Not at at 10:15 am once a day.

It was amazing and emotional because you’re learning about the history and seeing for yourself the impact of what had happened. My daughter who is 1 years old loved it and walked a little bit until she kept getting distracted. I love that you can go in your own pace and really feel in the scenery of everything

Love the thermal wonderland. Absolute must visit if travelling NZ. Has some nice walks around the park that are not hard but there are some steps you need to climb on return of you decide to walk to the lake. The only issue we and many others had was the Lady Knox geyser. Access to the geyser was confusing and not very well documented. It advises you to get there early but there is No one there to direct you. You drive to was is sign posted to Lady Knox only to be greeted by a gate that says Private Property. Returning back to the main car park is quite a distance from Lady Knox but turns out, you need to wait for the gate to open and then drive down to another car park. It would be good if there were a sign at the gate saying when it opens or to visit the information centre to check in.

Had been here quite some years ago and was very impressed with how this place is presented and its thermal activities. Tracks excellent, safety fences and signs mean you couldn't possibly accidentally get into danger. We went on a stunningly beautiful day and the only thing wrong was there was no wind and so the steam sat over the Champagne (?) pool. We were really impressed with everything and would advise anyone to go there. It was amazing seeing how many manuka plants can grow so close to the hot pools!

Great morning at Wai-O~Tapu. Short drive down from Rotorua, arrived for the Lady Knox Geyser eruption at 10:15, following this returned to the visitor centre for a walk around the the beautiful geo-thermal area. Very enjoyable walk with lots of signs giving more information on points of interest. We could have easily spent much longer at the park but had to leave just after lunchtime as we had an afternoon activity booked in Rotorua. Coffees and snacks at the cafe were also first rate.

Stopped off here in February 2026 whilst en route to Rotoroa. Even though it was midweek, it was quite busy so it's a very popular attraction. It's a self guided walk around the reserve and there's different trails depending on how energetic you're feeling. We managed to complete them all and took our time wandering around. There are a few benches and rest points for anyone struggling with the walking. The day we visited was quite hot and glad we brought some water with us. There is a café and gift shop on site as well. It's a unique landscape and great to learn about the geology of the place. Definitely worth adding to your itinary if you happen to be in the Rotoroa area.
