We were excited for our full-day trip to the West and East MacDonnell Ranges, but unfortunately it proved to be a mixed experience. Mahesh deserves top marks for his thoughtful and generous hospitality. Mid-morning and mid-afternoon he produced an impressive spread of snacks, cooking up spicy pastries and sweet treats on a camping stove, accompanied by a vast selection of hot drinks. It was a genuinely welcome touch and showed real care for his guests. The day itself started well. As we left Alice Springs, Mahesh shared some entertaining local anecdotes and some observations about the town. After our stop at Anzac Hill, we headed into the West MacDonnell Ranges, but the commentary largely dried up. The experience became more like a taxi service between locations. Beyond being told the name of each site, there was very little narrative, context or interpretation. At most stops the guidance amounted to, “Follow that path and be back in 45 minutes.” As a result, we found ourselves exploring some of Central Australia’s most historic, culturally significant and sacred places largely unaccompanied and with little context about what we were seeing. We were dropped off at an excellent noodle bar back in Alice Springs for lunch. Afterwards, the day effectively restarted. New guests joined the bus for the East MacDonnell section, but first there was a repeat of the same drive through town, identical anecdotes and even a second visit to Anzac Hill. From there, the minimalist-information pattern continued for the remainder of the day. The scenery itself was spectacular and Mahesh was a lively and attentive host, but anyone looking for meaningful interpretation and insight into the landscapes, history and culture of the region may find the experience falls short of expectations.

An absolute great experience. Mahesh was an excellent guide. Very congenial and knowledgeable. Due to previous days rain and flooding some roads were closed so he altered the trip to give us a very unique experience. We were able to see both the East and West MacDonnell Ranges and the contrast between them.

Alice Holidays Tours is the best tour operator in Alice Springs. Although the group sizes are small, they conduct their tours with excellent explanations and attention to detail. This is the only tour that covers the most attractive sites of the East and West MacDonnell Ranges within a single day. We enjoyed every. EXCELLENT.......
