Ryten is one of the top winter hiking and snowshoeing destinations in Lofoten. Located in Lofotodden National Park near Fredvang, it offers iconic views of Kvalvika Beach and the dramatic peaks of Moskenes and Flakstad.

The route we follow has gentle terrain and no avalanche risk, making it a safe and accessible winter adventure with the right gear and an experienced guide.

The hike climbs to 543 meters with over 500 meters of elevation gain. It’s a challenge, but the views from the summit are unforgettable and often the highlight of our guests’ trip to Lofoten.

No previous hiking or snowshoeing experience is needed, but you should be comfortable with physical effort and deep snow in some sections along the way.

What To Expect

1

Ryten

Ivar, your driver and guide, will pick you up at your accommodation (anywhere between Å and Ramberg) and drive you to the trailhead. We will use snowshoes, microspikes, or potentially both, depending on the snow conditions. Ivar will show you how to use the snowshoes and adjust the hiking poles, and you’ll receive instructions on how to layer your clothes to avoid getting sweaty and subsequently cold. During the trip, we will take it easy and have frequent breaks so you can take pictures, catch your breath, and simply enjoy yourself. In a group of up to 8 people, everyone can have a different pace. We’ll always adjust to the slowest participant to make sure no one is left behind. This also means that others might need to walk slower or take breaks while waiting for the rest of the group. If you prefer not to be slowed down by other group members, we suggest booking a private hike and letting Ivar know a bit in advance so he can add more cardio to his training sessions.

  • Guided Hike to Ryten with Guide to Lofoten is a must-do scenic experience!

I did the snowshoe guided group hike to Ryten with Guide to Lofoten and it was the most beautiful hike I have ever done! The scenery was breathtaking! We were very lucky to have calm sunny winter weather for most of the hike but there was a cold wind at the top, so you need to be prepared with warm clothes if that happens while you are sitting having a tasty hot lunch with coffee or tea, prepared by the guide. Our guide was Jitka and she was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The snowshoes provided by Guide to Lofoten were excellent and easy to hike in. They also provide equipment such as trekking poles, gaiters, headlamp torch and larger backpacks if required. I left my headlamp torch in a borrowed backpack and, the next day, Radka was kind enough to return it to me and then drove me to Å so I wouldn't need to take the bus. Radka and Ivar are very warm and friendly and so knowledgeable about all things Lofoten. I cannot speak highly enough of Guide to Lofoten and the guided hike to Ryten.

We did the guided Ryten hike with Guide to Lofoten in Feb. 2026. Our guide, Jacob, did a fantastic job of leading us up a sometimes steep and icy trail, and even through a snowstorm, with smiles and encouragement! He sprinkled in some history and Norwegian culture even though he is not a Norwegian native. The views were out of this world and we had a great time! I would recommend this tour and give it a full five stars!

Jakub was very welcoming and friendly, prepared us hot water and snacks, and was attentive to our situation throughout and ready to help. In addition, Jakub says the weather today is exceptional: sunny, breezy and stunningly snowy. Our trip went well, our companions were friendly and everything was perfect. It is highly recommended.

My hike with Radka and Ivar was one of my favourite things I’ve done on my travels. The hike itself is absolutely stunning: you get the most beautiful views of a beach, the ocean and the surrounding mountains. Ivar and Radka are the kindest, most accomodating guides. I really enjoyed getting to know them and I learnt so much about the history and culture on the Lofoten islands through our many conversations throughout the day. Thank you so much again for having me!

What a lovely day for us with Radka and Ivan! The trip was well designed, not that hard but still challenging to keep you focus. The scenery was absolutely great! But I would like to address our special thanks to our guides. They were so considerate and helpful from the beginning to the end. Lunch was served with several choices with hot beverage, just like they mentione: "tasty". Chairs, selected carefully to make sure we sat conformably. Last but not the least, while Ivan helped our senior friend to go down, Radka photod us all along and emailed me the link. I am really appreciated and I strongly recommend you to join it!!

  • Great guides in Lofoten

Ivar and Radka are easily the best guides you can find in Lofoten! I have booked three trips with them, and all were excellent. They are friendly, reliable, and they know the archipelago like the back of their hands. The last point is crucial when travelling in harsh winter conditions. I think we couldn't enjoy our time in Lofoten without them.

  • Amazing Guided Hike to Ryten in Winter

We took the guided hike with Ivar and Jacob up to Ryten in early December. They had thought through comprehensively about the equipment required for a winter hike, shared fascinating facts about Lofoten along the way, and took amazing looking photos at each viewpoint. Most importantly, how much safety had been emphasized throughout the hike which mattered the most to us given our limited hiking experience in Norway. Thank you Guide to Lofoten, definitely left some great memories for us during our trip!

It honestly felt like magic how I met Ivar and Radka. I was cold and waiting for the bus alone outside the ferry station when I met Ivar’s friend, Clayton, who kindly called Ivar see if he can also give me a ride to my hotel. and that’s how I learned Ivar was a guide. I had no idea what to do in Lofoten, so I booked their winter hike. I was a bit nervous at first since I had no winter hiking experience and wasn’t sure if my clothes were right, but Ivar was incredibly thoughtful. He asked me to show him my shoes, explained what to wear and why, and made sure I felt prepared. On the day of the hike, he brought everything: snowshoes, lunch, hot water bottles, wool cushions, chairs, headlights, extra hats and socks — even a wool legging for me. Before starting, he checked everyone’s clothing to make sure we were warm and safe. During the hike, he kept checking on each of us and reminded us when to adjust layers so we wouldn’t overheat. We made it to the peak, and had lunch on the way down, I tomato spaghetti, eaten on the chair with wool cushions in the snow, such a simple but unforgettable moment. The snow was heavy and deep that day, and it turned into one of the most wonderful experiences I’ve had. I’m so grateful that my first winter hiking experience was with them! It was a bit demanding, but I absolutely loved it. And Ivar has a good sense of humour 😂 Highly recommended for anyone looking for a safe, thoughtful, and truly special winter hiking experience.
