Wētā Workshop has been making cool stuff for film and TV since 1987. Our crew has brought to life beloved characters and epic special effects for iconic blockbusters like The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Avatar and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Step into Wētā Workshop Experiences and explore a world of creativity, physical effects and movie magic on a guided tour through our creative home base.
You'll learn about the making of props, creatures and costumes created for your favourite films. Get hands-on with unique pieces from our many departments, catch our artists at work and discover how we’ve grown into the award-winning workshop you see today.

5.00Our guide, Taylor, was excellent. Really passionate and knowledgeable about all things WETA. Was fascinating to find out more about props, prosthetics, animatronics etc and to see some of the Lord of the Rings costumes up close and the attention to detail and time that went into some of those

Tour guide had an amazing personality, and was so enthusiastic & passionate about the workshop, which really added to how special it was. Booked it spontaneously on a rainy day in Wellington and I'm so glad I did so.

4.00Impressive skill and expertise on show at this amazing workshop! Really enjoyed the emphasis placed during the tour on the Kiwi ingenuity involved in making all the wonderful designs, this felt authentic and true to Kiwi values and something to inspire visitors. I definitely felt inspired to try some cardboard and tinfoil sculptures at home! Customer service throughout was great. Louis was also a warm, friendly and engaging tour guide - thank you. Also loved that there was a complimentary photo print as part of the tour price which felt like good value for money. Would recommend to fans of movie making and creative people when in Wellington.
