Wētā Workshop has been making cool stuff for film and TV since 1987. Our crew has brought to life beloved characters and epic special effects for iconic blockbusters like The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Avatar and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Step into Wētā Workshop Experiences and explore a world of creativity, physical effects and movie magic on a guided tour through our creative home base.

You'll learn about the making of props, creatures and costumes created for your favourite films. Get hands-on with unique pieces from our many departments, catch our artists at work and discover how we’ve grown into the award-winning workshop you see today.

Photography is strictly prohibited in all tour spaces, unless specified by the tour guide.

Collapsible wheelchairs with removable wheels can be accommodated providing the passenger is accompanied by someone who can assist them on board and disembark.

There is no luggage storage in the Weta Cave or at our tour spaces.

We're huge LOTR fans and could have spent all day here- so much to see. Brandon our guide was enthusiastic, entertaining and knowledgeable. My only slight criticism is that as a hearing impaired visitor I couldn't hear the videos, and there were no subtitles. Fascinating place, with the opportunity to handle props and have a go at sculpting. Also noticed other Weta items on display around Wellington, which we would otherwise have missed. The shop is incredible.

Fantastic tour. We didn't realise how many films and exhibitions WETA workshop was involved in. The detail in each piece is just brilliant. The artists working here are so talented. This place is well worth a visit.

I wasn’t sure what to expect but the guide was excellent providing fascinating facts about the origins and development of the company and information about all the creations, how they are made and in which films they appeared. I was impressed by all the models, prosthetics, costumes and weapons that were recognizable from the LOTR and Narnia films I’ve seen and loved. I was also impressed by the number of productions the Weta workshop has contributed to. Great stuff, Weta workshop! Keep it up!!
