Wētā Workshop has been making cool stuff for film and TV since 1987. Our crew has brought to life beloved characters and epic special effects for iconic blockbusters like The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Avatar and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Step into Wētā Workshop Experiences and explore a world of creativity, physical effects and movie magic on a guided tour through our creative home base.
You'll learn about the making of props, creatures and costumes created for your favourite films. Get hands-on with unique pieces from our many departments, catch our artists at work and discover how we’ve grown into the award-winning workshop you see today.

5.00This was such a fun experience. I mean before you even go in you can take pictures with props with Bilbo's Cave Trolls. The guide was so enthusiastic and has so much knowledge on the subject it was hard not to listen to her. Looking at the behind the scenes action for basically any movie you can think, especially Lord of the Rings, was so fundamental in appreciating the movie and the work that went on for it. 10/10 would recommend!

5.00We visited Wētā Workshop in Wellington with our two boys, and it was an absolutely amazing experience. From the moment we walked in, we were blown away by the creativity, craftsmanship, and passion behind everything on display. The tour was incredibly engaging and well explained, making it easy for both adults and children to understand how movie magic is created, from props and costumes to special effects and storytelling. Our boys were fascinated the entire time, asking questions and soaking it all in, which made the experience even more special for us as parents. What really stood out was how welcoming and interactive the team was. They made the kids feel involved and excited, and you could truly feel the love and pride they have for their work. It’s inspiring to see such world-class creativity coming from New Zealand. We left with big smiles, lots of photos, and memories we’ll talk about for a long time. If you’re in Wellington, especially with kids, this is a must-do experience. Highly recommended!

5.00Fantastic tour and our guide was ewally knowlegable. It was interesting to see the process on how costumes and prothestics were made. Wish we had gone to the one Auckland as well. However this was definately worth the visit.
