Our minds are blown that something so blatantly illegal and morally corrupt would occur with absolutely zero accountability or consequences. What a dark time in history yet fascinating to learn about. The heroes in the event stood out, such as the anonymous individual who bravely stood his ground in the center of the street as the mob of thousands approached, ultimately taking his life. We appreciated the opportunity this tour gave to hear these stories. The first 10-15 minutes of the tour reviewed early American history which felt a bit tedious (as we were anxious to jump into the events of post-civil war) but the guide likely felt it was laying a foundation. Other than that, however, all the stops and information were very relevant and intriguing. Max was knowledgeable, courteous, and welcoming of questions. We would recommend this tour! P.S. Have the app Zelle or cash on-hand for the end, because we were disappointed (and a bit sheepish) that we had only been prepared to offer a guide-tip via Venmo, which was not a transaction available for our guide.

Our guide Max was incredibly informative. He was full of amazing information. He delivered it beautifully. He kept our attention. He was very personable and accommodating. He had books with photographs of some of the people involved in the story, but mostly Max had an incredible amount of information in his head.

Max was our tour guide and he was amazing! He was so knowledgeable about the history of Wilmington and was so engaging that my 7 and 10 year old enjoyed themselves. This is a must if you want to know the true history of Wilmington.

I recently did a walking tour in Wilmington focused on the 1898 Wilmington Coup, and it was an absolutely phenomenal experience. The tour was informative, engaging, and incredibly well done from start to finish. The tour guide and his fiancée were extremely knowledgeable, thoughtful, and passionate about the history they shared, which made the experience even more impactful. They truly made our trip memorable, and I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Wilmington and wanting a deeper understanding of its history.

The tour is actually about two hours. So make sure you wear some comfortable shoes. The tour was excellent. Our guide was very knowledgeable. He did not just talk about what happened on that date. But all the events leading up to what happened on the massacre. I would definitely recommend this tour for any history buffs

Excellent tour. The tour leader Max was very knowledgeable and brought out all the beliefs and societal and political forces that caused the coup. It was interesting to learn that a lot of planning went into the coup, it didn't just happen. The connections to the Spanish-American War, also in 1898, added a lot. It's an important piece of history.

Max is an articulate and captivating storyteller…and obviously a great student of history! As we walked (with timely rest stops along the way), he did a phenomenal job describing both the key players and critical events leading up to and including November 10th, 1898…while presenting all key points clearly, audibly, and in a logical fashion. In addition, he always ensured the safety of his group (there were 8 of us) as we navigated the historic streets of Wilmington. Highly recommend this tour if you enjoy history…you won’t be disappointed!

Wear good and comfortable walking shoes! This is a walking tour. There are a couple of opportunities to sit while the guide talks, but depends on the size of the group if you get a seat. That being said Max, out guide, was so informative and full of knowledge and care for the history. While I already knew about the massacre, Max provided details and timelines that I had not heard of before as well as its context within the larger political landscape at the time. I enthusiastically highly recommend this tour!

Our tour was amazing. Max did a wonderful job telling the entire *true* story of the Wilmington Coup, giving us the opportunity to ask questions, understand everything that happened and the order of events. I highly recommend Max as a tour guide, everyone should take the time to learn our city’s history and political background. Thank you, Max, for your time, care and dedication to our history.

Our tour guide did a fantastic job telling the horrible story of the 1898 Wilmington Coup and Massacre. He took us to places both marked and unmarked where the events unfolded, brought in first-person accounts and oral histories, and shared many resources for how to learn more about this “criminally under-discussed” event in American history. Highly recommended.
