What To Expect
Tulcea County
You have included the car (4X4, including fuel) and a good guide, to show you as more as possible from the rich fauna of Dobrudja, on the best routes available in winter. Being a private program we can start at any hour BUT! for best results, we recommend you to start an hour before sunrise time. The trip last until sunset and cover the best areas for GEESE and other winter birds. We do the route to include grazing fields, steppe, forest areas, lakes and marshlands with places for feeding or roosting for many species of birds. Is not a trip to check places, is a trip to search and find birds, it is a SLOW trip with target on special places where we can observe birds. The guide will drive the car at low speed, along the routes we know very well, stopping from place to place, to scan the fields by binoculars and scope, in search of the birds. The most important is to see the birds without disturbing them.

5.00It was our first time in Romania, and we had two days to birdwatch in Dobruja and the Danube River Delta. We hoped to see some winter specialties, especially the Red-breasted Goose (we got great visuals both days), and (on the second day) to take a boat trip on the Delta. We unfortunately had extremely strong winds both days, which made the boat trip impossible. At first I was upset about this, but our guides were flexible, modified our itinerary to maximize our experience given the conditions, and we ended up with two very unique, fulfilling, and bird-filled days around Dobruja. It being our first time, we had a long list of target species. Our guides went above and beyond trying to find them for us, and we ended up seeing more than I expected! In addition, they took us for a few “surprise” birds (I won’t spoil it for you!), which was very exciting and unexpected. The guides are professionals in every regard. In addition to their unmatched knowledge of local birds, we learned so much about the history and culture of the region through our conversations over the two days. They were patient, kind, resourceful, and treated us and the natural world with the utmost respect. I highly recommend booking your trip through them, and I hope to come back someday to see the region and its birds in the spring or summer.
