  • Awesome Nara/Uji Tour

At-Chan was an INCREDIBLE tour guide. She shared so many great historical notes and fun stories, taught all of us some Japanese/region specific cultural and language nuances, and also let us through an origami craft on the bus ride to Nara! The actual sites were also amazing, loved the two shrines we visited and of course, the bowing deer were truly something. The trip to Uji on the way back was also a highlight - great matcha, also fun shopping (ceramics, antiques, tea, sake, souvenirs etc). Would absolutely recommend, a very fun way to spend a day and meet other travelers!

We traveled during the off-season (late Jan) with our 3 year old and infant, and we had a great experience. Being on a new tour in winter, we shared the private charter bus with only 1 other couple, but the energy and professionalism of Maisan remained at full-bus level. We started the morning off visiting Kasugataisha Shrine and its lanterns, but we only got a few feet into the path before our 3 year old started fawning over the famous bowing deer. We spent the next 2 hours visiting temples while taking extremely cute photos of our toddler posing as a deer… they really do bow to you! The afternoon lunch and matcha experience in Uji was also a highlight. Our guide for matcha making showed off his 16 generation pedigree of making Imperially-grade matcha complete with cameos with the Imperial family and celebs, and his family helped us all grind up our own matcha powder. We ended the day browsing the streets and contemplating how exactly one would make matcha beer. Our guide Maisan was great; she quickly became our daughter’s new best friend and made sure everyone was having a great time.
