joined a full-day Luoyang private tour with a guide named Spring on 7 October 2025, and it was one of the best guided experiences I’ve had in China. Spring is fluent in English, knowledgeable about Chinese art, Buddhist history, and dynastic culture, and very organized. He arranged comfortable transportation and guided me through Longmen Grottoes, White Horse Temple, and Shaolin Temple. His explanations about the sculptural differences across dynasties and the evolution of Buddhist art were fascinating. Everything was perfectly planned — from timing and transport to insightful commentary. Spring made the tour both smooth and intellectually enriching. I highly recommend Spring to anyone looking for an English-speaking private tour guide in Luoyang who can explain the cultural and artistic details behind these UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Our tour of the Longmen Grottos and Shaolin Temple was fantastic. Spring was knowledgeable and considerate. He spoke very good English and provided much information about the sites we visited. His knowledge of Chinese history is really good! He contacted us well in advance about pick up time and was organised throughout the trip. If you need an English tour, Spring is highly recommended!

Spring is an awesome guide and the itinerary was perfect. He arrived promptly at 8am at my hotel in Zhengzhou. We first headed to Shaolin. The drive through the mountains was beautiful. The weather was perfect. I visited in September at the start of Fall but before the nationwide Mid-autumn festival. It is an extraordinarily beautiful scenic region. We had hoped to catch one of the morning martial arts demonstrations but there was an unexpectedly large crowd and Spring suggested we wait for the afternoon session instead, so we toured the temple complex with a break for lunch and a leisurely shopping session. Spring was very knowledgable about the history and the myths surrounding the temple, the statues and the buildings. We then made our way to the Kung Fu demonstration. Spring knew all the best vantage points which made it easy to enjoy the experience. Next we drove to the Longmen grottoes. It was another gorgeous drive. The town of Luoyang is very pretty too. We took the trolley from the ticket offices to the grottoes and back, but the grottoes themselves have to be experienced on foot, with a lot of climbing. The grottoes were magnificent. Spring explained the history and politics behind the creation of the caves and carvings. He showed me pictures of renderings made by conservators, on his phone. He is a fount of information on every detail of the caves and carvings. Be prepared to do a lot of walking and climbing. Wear comfortable shoes. The lunch at Shaolin was one of the most delicious meals I have eaten in China and it was unbelievably cheap. Spring was very helpful when my phone didn't have a connection and I couldn't pay for things, he used his phone to pay for things and I paid him when we returned to town. His English is great and he helped translate for me at the shops, the restaurant and the trolley drivers. I cannot recommend Spring enough!
