• Excellent brown bear viewing at Lake Clark

  I took Rust's Flying Service to get to Crescent Lake in Lake Clark NP to view bears. This was a fantastic trip in every way. Rust's Flying Service was first class as was Redoubt Mountain Lodge. Our trip was at the beginning of the bear viewing season on Crescent Lake (August 5), and the water level at the lake was still very high which limited bear access to salmon and therefore the number of bears. Every salmon eaten by the bears (except one) the the skeletal remains of a salmon cleaned by a fisherman. The NPS wisely installed the fish cleaning station in the river so that salmon carcasses are washed into the lake where they can be discovered by bears. It was interesting observing the different methods used by bears to discover the salmon carcasses. Seven of the 10 bears I saw were sows with one or two cubs. It was interesting watching the interaction between the sow and cubs. The salmon lunch at Redoubt Lodge was excellent and a good break from the nearly 8 hours spent on the comfortable pontoon boats. The guide on our boat was a 13 year veteran employee of the lodge and was very knowledgeable. To see more bears, I recommend taking this trip later in the summer.

  I never would have believed that any place could be as beautiful as Homer. I have been a beach person all my life, but after my visit to Alaska, I wish I could spend every summer there. I am going to add a picture of the airbud we stayed at. It was so clean, big, comfortable and the views were magnificent. Also easy to get anywhere we wanted to go.

  Unbelievable! Add this to your bucket list! We put ourselves in Trent’s hands, and were not disappointed. The absolute highlight of our entire 2-week trip to Alaska. When the weather didn’t cooperate for Plan A to Katmai, Trent proposed & we agreed to Plan B, Crescent Lake. This tiny portion of Lake Clarke NP gave us captivating & up close (20-30 yards on a pontoon boat) views of bears fishing & eating salmon. The highlight was a family of 4 brown bears, mother & triplet 2-year old bears. We saw them swimming, playing, growling over salmon, climbing into empty boats, and generally at home on the shore. We learned a great deal about the location, salmon, brown bears, and living in the moment. All in a setting that can only be described as heavenly: turquoise water, lush green forests, snow-topped mountain (Redoubt), sockeye salmon slowly coming to their life’s end after spawning, brown bears actively in & out of the water, a juevenile bald eagle perched & watchful. A stunning show of nature & the right time to visit the right place. Do not hesitate! Book this now!

  The flight and the bear viewing tour is amazing. Must do if you are in Homer. Our pilot, Trent, was great and made the flight very pleasant. Highly recommend

  A long overdue review. We visited in July 2020 and originally scheduled a Brooks Falls bear flight but the park was shut down due to covid. So we audibled to a bear flight to Katmai. To say it was incredible would be an understatement. We flew about an hour (with amazing water and mountain scenery on the way) and dropped into a lake in the middle of the park, then walked a short way to the river. It was literally unbelievable how many bears we saw and how close we were to them. We saw them catching fish, fighting, relaxing, etc. right up close, yet we felt completely safe the whole time. Out of two amazing weeks we spent in Alaska, the bear tour was probably the highlight.
