On the last day of the tour of Japan in the spring of 2026, it was possible to travel through time and travel to the era of luxury transatlantic cruises in the first third of the twentieth century. How? After taking a tour of the Yokohama Floating Museum in Yamashita Park, the legendary liner Hikawa Maru (named after the Shinto temple Hikawa Maru), lovingly known by locals as the Queen of the North Pacific. The interiors of the majestic – almost a century old, launched in 1929 – have been beautifully restored. The first-class area was particularly impressive, with its elegant Art Deco style. The grand staircase, reception desk, luxurious dining room, exquisite reading salon and smoking room have created a complete sense that we are respectable passengers who boarded the Hikawa Maru for a 13-day voyage across the ocean (like Charlie Chaplin and Albert Einstein once did). The liner, which was designated a National Important Cultural Heritage in 2016, is not just a beautiful set, but also a keeper of amazing stories. During her 30 years of service (1930-1960), she made 254 voyages across the Pacific (Yokohama-Seattle), carried 25,000 passengers, survived World War II, served as a hospital ship, and later delivered returnees. The museum's inspection is thoughtful to the point. They considered with interest how the cabins of different classes were arranged - from the royal apartments to the modest rooms of the 3rd class, comparing the comfort level of that era. They climbed up to the captain's bridge and into the house, which offers a cool view of Yokohama Bay; they went down to the huge engine room – the “heart” of the MV; they wandered around the decks, read on information signs descriptions in English. I liked the ship's story, which is related to the English proverb “Never put herring over salmon” – see photo if moderated. Ticket prices are more than moderate. It took a little over an hour to examine (it was very windy on the open decks, you won't stay long). I highly recommend those interested in history, sea cruises or just looking for an atmospheric location in Yokohama.
