This tour to Barbagia was amazing -- it was so full of culture, connections and a sense for the soul of the Sardinian mountains. Franco was a fantastic tour guide. He tailored the trip to what my sister and I were interested in -- we basically told him whatever he recommended. We saw ancient archaeological ruins, watched an expert mask maker do his craft at his workshop in Mamoiada; we dined with shepherds at their farm and saw powerful political art in Orgosolo. I will not forget this experience -- it was so unique. The best was meeting Franco Sale who makes the traditional masks that are part of a time-honored ritual in Mamoiada. The masks are somewhat haunting, but they are revered. Our guide Franco simply called up Franco Sale and asked if we could come by, so we walked to his workshop. The Shepherds' lunch was also a highlight -- we were welcomed and treated liked special guests while we ate incredibly fresh meats, cheeses and bread. This tour gave me a different perspective of Sardinia, and my sister and I welcomed it, since we were traveling with our daughters and we wanted something besides beaches and shopping. I can't recommend this tour enough! It will be engaging and memorable.

Francesco collected us from our hotel in Cagliari, we made the very smooth drive up to the first village of the day Mamoiada to learn about the masks and festivals that happen in the villages. We also had the opportunity to try some Sardinia wine and cheese after a walk of the village. Next stop was lunch at a vineyard just outside of the village where we had the pleasure of a home made lunch with the owners and Francesco. Last stop of the day was Orgosolo for the street art that began in 1969. Amazing village in the mountains, glorious views and interesting political and social murals on the walls. All in all a fantastic, relaxed day seeing this part of the island somewhere we would not have got to see if not for this trip. Thank you.

Spending time in Mamoiada and Orgosolo in the company of Francesco, a truly knowledgeable, passionate and experienced driver-guide, exceeded our expectations. After already completing day excursions with this guide in Cagliari city; Cabras & Sinis, and the famous Barumini, this particular day trip was also terrific. In short: the masks intriguing; the shepherds' lunch was an amazing cultural immersion; and we absorbed the stories of the murales during a relaxing walk. Wow, unforgettable. Thanks

This tour was absolutely one of the best. Francesco our guide arrived at our hotel exactly when stated. As we drove he explained what we were going to see. Our first stop was in Mamoiada where we visited the Museo Delle Maschere Mediterranee, here we learned about the history, making and purpose of the masks. A very through video demostrated how the masks and bells are made and how the costumes and masks are worn. From the museum we went to Orgosolo to view the street art, some of which is political dating back to WW2. A special treat was having tea and cookies with Francesco's aunt who has lived in this town for her entire life. After which we had lunch at the winery owned by Francesco's college roommate's family.
If you are visiting Caglieri, I highly recommend this tour.

Our guide, Francesco, was passionate about Sardinia and was able to impart a great deal of knowledge on Sardinia on our tour. He successfully taught us about the history of the masks and the whole tradition of the celebrations while guiding us through the Mamoiada museum.
In Orgosolo he showed us many of the murals on a walking tour and explained the significance of the meanings and art behind them.
We viewed Luca's vineyard from atop a Nuraghe structure and enjoyed tasting his cannonau wine with appetizers and a lamb stew he had made especially for us. The small vineyard had been in his family for generations.
A wonderful tour!
