Great tour of this historic house to see inside and learn about the 18+ people who lived or worked there. The family lived on floors two and three. The first floor is where the slaves cooked meals and did other chores and where some of the slaves slept. We had a docent give a 70-minute tour. There was a lot to see on the first floor and so much history on all of the people and what their lives were like. I highly recommend this house and tour if you not only want to see inside a house, but learn a lot about the people and what their lives were like (lots of artifacts from the family and period pieces).

We toured the Davenport House on our trip to Savannah. Our docent was very knowledgeable and paced the tour beautifully. You start in the welcome center (behind the old pharmacy) and hear how this wonderful building was saved from becoming a parking lot. Then into the courtyard followed by the street level story of the house. This has been restored to tell the story of enslaved people at the time the Davenports lived there along with information on each of the people who were there. After that the tour moves to the main living floor and upstairs bedroom floor where you get an understanding of life in Savannah as well as the particular story of Isaiah Davenport's family.

We had purchased tickets on line for specific time. We were ahead of schedule and they were able to fit us in on an earlier tour. The old pharmacy behind the Davenport house is where you can purchase tickets and read the timeline on the wall in the attached museum. This is where you meet your docent. The house was scheduled to be torn down for a parking lot for neighboring funeral home. Learn about and see a picture of the women that saved this house on the timeline. Our docent, I think "Louann", did well engaging us throughout the tour. She had a strong knowledge base about the family, house architecture and enslaved. In 1827, Sarah was 8 months pregnant with their 10th child when Isaiah died from Yellow Fever. She turned the house into a boarding house until 1840. Furnishing are time period. Photos without flash are allowed. Hop On n Off Trolley stops here. The trolley is where we learned about and saw the building where Isaiah and Sarah lived while this house was being built. Tour was about 70 minutes. Senior ticket is $13.50.
