I had a terrible experience with this bike ride and would not recommend it. The tour guides were fine. Transportation cold and I had to add layers, which would have been fine without the other issues. After the bike ride started, when I was going about 30-40mph going downhill, my bike started wobbling and would not stop. At this speed you could DIE OR BECOME SERIOUSLY INJURED if you crash like this. I am a somewhat experienced cyclist and have cycled a lot in the alps, and I believe this is the only reason I was able to prevent a terrible fall from happening. Imagine going that fast and having your bike's front tire start wobbling uncontrollably and trying to stop? If this would have happened to someone with less experience it would have been a disaster. People have died cycling this route -- it is a risk. The rest of the ride was stressful and not enjoyable because I had to make sure I was under a certain speed. The guide said that the shocks were broken and gave me another bike which seemed fine, but come on guys, you should have provided a refund for that experience. I am not the type of person to raise demand anything or cause a scene, but this was just bad customer service. I def learned to not trust rentals being maintained properly after this. I trust my bike, but who knows what kind of maintenance someone else's bike has received. The last part of the bike ride was also terrible. I have no idea why there isn't a proper bike lane on the stretch of road going through town but the ENTIRE way drivers were honking and riding our butts for the last 3 miles. I wish they would have just ended the trip before we got into town and driven us back because I didn't gain anything from that experience.

John was an amazing guide and we would recommend the excursion. The only advice is to dress warm for the sunrise. The pants and gloves were not available - only the windbreaker jackets which is why we gave 4 stars.

Oh my goodness! We loved our tour with Eddie Buddy! It was so informative. We thought we had lost our minds agreeing to arrive for a bike tour at 3 am, which meant we had to leave our condo at 1:30. Good grief, but boy were we wrong! Ahhh-mazing does not begin to describe it. First of all, we learned so much about Haleakalā and the area around it from Eddie Buddy. He knows so much, and he was able to answer any and all questions. He truly loves his life here, and he was willing to share that joy with all of us. The sunrise was beautiful, even though it was a little covered by the clouds. Who cares! It is otherworldly being 10000 feet above sea level looking over a volcanic crater literally above the clouds. It is so freaking cold, but you just don’t care. The tour group provides outer gear to protect from the cold, and it is waterproof in case it rains. The visitor center has a lot of cool souvenirs as well. Ok…on to the bikes. We are experienced holiday bikers over 50, and I had a great deal of trepidation about this trip. With instruction from Eddie Buddy, my mind was i quickly put at ease. The loopy, windy trip down was thrillng with stunning scenery. I never once felt unsafe. But if I had, all I had to do was call Wddie Buddy, and he would’ve come get me. We stopped in a precious little town on our way down and had coffee at Maria Coffee. The best coffee on the entire island. Great shopping here as well. I bought a handpainted piece of art for my home from a local artist. Also beautiful! The whole day was one to forever remember. I would do it again in a heartbeat! 10/10 worth every penny!

Our driver, Eddie, was fantastic. He was entertaining and informative. The bikes were in excellent condition and the route is easy to follow. He did a thorough job of making sure everyone was safe and how to navigate the roads on the bike. While we still highly recommend this activity, there were a few things that fell a bit short. With such an early start, the drive seemed to move slow with a few slow rolling stops to point out deer or a landmark. Sadly, the morning glow started and we had not yet reached the summit. Ultimately we parked and had only a few minutes to use the bathroom and get in place to watch the sunrise then boom back in the van. So that was roughly 2 hours driving in the van for less than 30 minutes at the summit. It was very rushed. It would have been nice to gotten there about 20 minutes sooner to watch the glow start. Dress in layers. There was a quick photo op on the drive down but no stop at the visitors center. The bike ride down. It was convenient to be able to leave a bag in the van with the layers of clothes and jackets no longer needed. We enjoyed the self guided having the chance to stop at our leisure and take photos. It is definitely a braking ride and be smart to use them. The fact that the law prohibits biking through Kula meant we had to stop, load the bikes, get back on the van and jump over the town. Thats a significant chunk of the ride. A nice stop in Makawao for coffee and a bite to eat. Having done this ride before the law made for a disappointing comparison. I would recommend this activity, however I’m not likely to do it again until the change the law to ride through Kula and arrive to the summit a few minutes earlier.

We had a great time despite socked in with clouds for the sunrise. The guide gave great directions, entertaining and the equipment was in great condition. Great to have the Helly Hansen clothing offered with this tour so you can pack a little lighter in luggage.

Our driver was great, but the overall operation was poorly managed and disorganized. From the start, things felt off. Pants were not available in sizes below XL, and at our scheduled check-in time the only staff member present was a very new hire. The process was chaotic, and the tour leader came across as rushed and unfriendly. The ride up to the summit was hurried because the leader arrived late and blamed the approaching solstice. As a result, we reached the top just minutes before sunrise and completely missed the predawn light, which is a major part of the experience. The ride down had further issues. A local community has restricted group bike traffic, yet the company has not adapted. We ended up waiting on the side of the road for nearly an hour because of this. On the positive side, the bikes were in decent condition overall. I did have to swap mine at the start due to low tire pressure, but it worked fine afterward.

First of all, our guide John was fantastic! As for the total experience… Total waste of time and money. Was on the self guided tour but had to sit around waiting for the guided tour group multiple times, literally burned over 2 hours sitting around. Avoid unless you have no issues with wasting time. You can drive yourself to see the sunrise. Avoid!!

Dan is an excellent guide! Very knowledgeable, and loaded with some very clever ‘DadJokes’ to keep it flowing. It’s colder up top than you think, but be prepared and enjoy a once in a lifetime experience!!

There was a major accident in the morning and a road was closed off. The driver had to make up some time going up the mountain in order for us to catch the sunrise. He was Amazing! The weather gear they provide for you runs on the large side. It worked perfectly but still dress warm. Gloves are a best bet. The view….. incredible!! Truly truly something for the bucket list. Highly recommend! The chant they do to welcome the sun was simply beautiful.
