Preston was really amazing, if you are going make sure to go with him. He exclusively shows you the best sights and does things the others don’t do. It was a breathtaking experience and definitely worth the early rising and long drive.

This was a really cool experience. Im not sure the kids (9yo and 12yo) enjoyed it as much as I did, but our tour guide, Preston, was great!! On the way up the mountain, he let us all sleep until traffic inevitably woke us, and on the way down, he passed a lot of knowledge to us about Haleakala and Maui in general. He also stopped for us to get good pictures on the way down. Overall, it was a really cool experience. This is a must-do in Maui. There’s nothing else like it in the world.

Preston was patient, knowledgeable and very kind! He shared his jacket, gloves, hand warmers and secret tidbits of knowledge with us! The bus was comfy, pickup on time and the breakfast was a delicious way to end this sunrise experience. I appreciated the few mini stops on the way back down after the sunrise for special pictures and the opportunity to check out a lava drop. The sunrise experience was what brought us to this tour, but Preston was absolutely the hidden gem!

I'm not a morning person but this was worth waking up early for! Preston was a well-informed guide who has a passion for his adopted home of Maui. Also a terrific driver, making the ascent as smooth as possible. He zigs when other guides zag which gave us a little breathing room away from the other groups.

Let me start with the genuinely great: our guide Preston is an absolute gem. He was quiet on the way up – which was perfect because most of us slept. But on arrival and the drive down, he came alive. He spent the whole descent sharing stories about the plants, animals, and history of Maui in a way that was funny, warm, and completely engaging. He made what could have been just a long ride back feel like its own experience. Now let me tell you what the other reviews either buried or skipped entirely – and please thumb this up so more people see it before they pack. Bring the serious cold weather gear. The idea that a hoodie and a light jacket will suffice is crazy. We were there in mid June when the highs were 82 at the beach and completely clear sky’s and at the summit it was bone-chillingly wet, wind-whipping cold. We left Ka’anapali at 2:30 a.m. and it was already hot and humid. By the time we reached the summit, the weather app said 41 degrees but it felt closer to 30 – raining sideways, wind coming at us like something out of a North Dakota plain. We had gear rated for freezing temperatures and were still so cold we were fantasizing about hot showers and every cup of hot cocoa on the bus. It took until 10 a.m. (4 hours after we left? for our clothes and shoes to fully dry out. The only one of us who stayed truly dry was my son, because his coat was long enough to cover both his top half and the upper part of his legs. Here is what to pack: long parka, waterproof layers, gloves, hand warmers, a hoodie or cap, and do not forget a scarf. It is pitch dark and freezing when you arrive, and the scenery changes every single second over the course of like 1 hour— you do not want to spend that time trying to warm up inside the van or the visitor center when it opens. You want to be out there taking it all in. I highly recommend that you pack a full separate bag of winter clothes and pay whatever the fee is to check it. Here is something else I did not see mentioned anywhere: you can leave your stuff on the bus while you are at the summit. So there is zero reason not to bring it. If you arrive and it is clear and warm, great – leave the gear and enjoy it. But if it is a wet, windy, feels-like-30 morning in mid-June like ours was, you will be so glad you have it. We saw people in shorts on our bus who did not even get off the vehicle because it was too cold. We saw people standing at the summit in shorts and a tank top or a sun dress. Do not be those people. Pack the bag. Pay the fee. Take the pictures. Experience the beauty at the heart of Maui. As the saying goes there’s no bad weather just bad gear and that 100% applies here.

Preston was great! Very knowledgeable and friendly. Provided us with snacks, warm drinks and hand warmers for when we were cold on top of Haleakala. We had an incredible time with him!
