Fantastic day out. Value for money. Lots of time with the reindeer. Lunch was delicious. Fascinating to hear about the Sami culture. Even the drive there was great- stunning scenery. Guides very hospitable and friendly. Would definitely recommend this tour. 10 out of 10.

If you’re wanting to do something a little different & understand the culture of the Saami people - this is one way to do it! We got an hour to hang out with the reindeer followed by a traditional Saami lunch (Reindeer stew) - we were then provided with an understanding on the Saami culture, how important the reindeer are, the traditional dress & even heard about the stories told throughout the generations (mainly revolving around monsters) 🤣 it was rather amusing! Thank you for having me, an experience I will always remember! And one I can happily tell me kids now, that I’m best friends with Santa & the reindeer, so they now must behave 🤪

It is wonderful to see how nature makes us such extraordinary gifts and to know about the Saami culture is something that you cannot miss, feeding the reindeer is something incredible, living with them fills you with energy.

Excellent experience overall. The folks handling the reindeer feeding, lunch and brief history of the Samii people were top notch. An afternoon well spent. For those of us who are of Native American descent, their story is frightingly similar as to how the the US government treated their native people. Stay strong.

Whilst the reindeer were adorable and friendly there are far too many people and this spoilt the experience for me. The whole trip is 4/4.5 hours with only 20 mins spent with the reindeer. The rest is travelling time and a speaker learning you about Sami culture whilst this is educational the lunch and talk take up the bulk of the time. We did get to wander around for a short while before getting back on the coach. Smaller groups would be better. That said I still enjoyed meeting feeding the reindeers and the location is very scenic.

Tromsø: Reindeer Feeding and Sami Cultural Experience by Tromsø Lapland 4.5hour morning tour. Tour staff at the pick up location were really helpful getting us booked onto our tour and on the correct buses. The scenery on the route to the location was stunning. The location was not too far from Tromso, so we weren’t on the bus for hours. Upon arrival the temperature was -15 Celsius. Wrap up warm! We were told that they would provide further warm clothing if required. On arrival we were greeted by welcoming staff who explained what our tour would involve, that we would go and meet the reindeer, and how to feed them We were able to use a traditional Sami tent as our base, and leave our bags safely there. There were also biscuits and lots of hot beverage supplied that we could help ourselves to. The scenery at the reindeer camp was beautiful and we were blessed with good weather, clear skies. We were provided with buckets of reindeer food. They were adorable, and seemed happy and well cared for and excited for food. It was very cold and your hands get very cold. You could stay out with them as long as you wanted, and we were told what time to be back at the tent for lunch. Lunch provided was delicious traditional stew. If they offer second helpings, go for it! We then had a talk from our guide who is Sami, and she spoke about her culture and heritage after lunch. It was really interesting. Though this was a short trip for a few hours, it was worth it, and a lovely experience.

When I arrived at this tour's pickup spot and saw two huge coach busses full of other guests, I wasn't really sure what to expect from the outing, but it ended up standing out as a highlight of my trip to Scandinavia. Meeting the reindeer was a wonderful experience as they were so gentle, friendly, and curious. I was able to feed one from my hand, which was fun. Guests were given plenty of time to take photos and get to know the reindeer, then we headed inside for lunch and an informative presentation about Sami culture. I had the vegan soup/stew, which was both delicious and filling. Our Sami guide (I sadly do not recall his name) was funny and talked about some major points of his culture. I enjoyed the outing and felt it was a valuable part of my time in the Arctic.

We are animal lovers, so naturally we wanted to meet reindeer in their local environment. We have done a number of reindeer feeding activities throughout Scandinavia over the years. Each one has been very different - so if you have done reindeer feeding previously STILL consider this activity in Tromsø. Well worth the investment as the reindeer have their own personalities, and it was heart-warming and special to interact with individual reindeer. There were lots of reindeer, and you pick which ones you would like to meet and feed. There is the option of reindeer sledding when you book, however we opted just to feed the reindeer. We got to do 2 rounds of feeding the reindeer. We booked at the Tourist Shop, not the Tourist Information Centre for this tour. In addition to feeding the reindeer, we had an informative and entertaining presentation about the Sámi culture in Northern Norway. Our Sámi guide (had the longest name) was entertaining as well as demonstrated yerking (Sámi singing) and provided details about the Sámi Culture. We had the opportunity to try traditional bidos (reindeer meat and vegetables) or vegetarian soup. All produce, including the bread, is made locally and was extremely tasty and fresh. If you go in winter, we would recommend snow gloves for warmth, as when you feed the reindeer you can take your gloves off to hand feed. It’s worth hand feeding just for a reindeer kiss! For us travelling is also about the journey, not just the destination. The only recommendation we could make to Tromsø Lapland for this tour is to have some interaction with the Sámi guide from the start of the bus trip, not just at the location. It could be points of interest on the bus drive, learning some Norwegian or Sámi words, practicing how to pronounce the Sámi guide’s name or telling a Sámi story for example. Would recommend this activity for children and adults. Accessibility due to the snow and landscape would need to be considered.
