4.00Despite the frustrations with the app, this still added to the experience in Rhodes and helped us navigate around the town without a guide. Because it is location based we were able to stop and start as we needed to (we had a guided tour in the middle of the day) and so it was very helpful in getting around to the sites while providing helpful information. Given the low price it was definitely worth doing if you don’t have a person to guide you. More details here: We had extra time in Rhodes and couldn’t find a walking tour we liked (it was low season) so opted for this. We have used Guidealong in the USA many times and those are fantastic so we are familiar with this type of technology and had high hopes. We opted to buy two of them so that my wife and I didn’t have to stick totally next to each other as we went around. We activated the day before and you use the same code for both…except the second one failed and, when we contacted them, they told us that it had already been used twice - it had not. But they reset it for us overnight and we were able to activate it on the day. Getting the app to give directions was confusing. It would sometimes show a directions icon and sometimes not. If you use the option to send it to google maps it takes you out of the app and then gives you driving directions, which is NOT what you need in Rhodes as much of it is not open to cars, so it has you going around the things you actually want to see. Instead stay in the app and just follow along…once you finally get it to show you directions. When approaching a site of interest you had to be practically on top of it before the location description kicked in, so we often found ourselves just touching the icon we were heading for so that we could listen as we approached instead of standing in front of things as the talk went on. If you went back to the map from the description then the talking stopped. The descriptions were clear and very informative but a little dry with no humor at all. They could learn a lot from Guidealong on how to put together a more engaging tour IMHO. Overall, worth the money once you overcame the app frustrations, but it could be better based on our experiences with similar apps.
