It is recommended to book transport to the departure point in advance. Please also allow extra time to get to the departure point for check-in. We advise you arrive at least 15 minutes before the tour departure to allow time to check-in for the tour. Unfortunately, we are unable to hold the bus or refund for any late arrivals.

Return times are approximate and subject to road conditions and weather. Please ensure you allocate sufficient time for any onward travel plans, allowing at least 3 hours after the scheduled return time for connections or activities.

Our first stop of the day is Dunkeld in the heart of Perthshire. Known for its 13th century cathedral, this is the perfect spot to fuel up with a coffee and pastry from a charming local bakery.
Highland Folk Museum
The Highland Folk Museum is Britain's first open-aired museum and an opportunity to experience firsthand how highlanders lived, worked and socialised from the 1700s.
Culloden Battlefield
One of the most somber locations in Scotland, Culloden Battlefield remains mostly untouched to pay respect to those who lost their lives in the final Jacobite Uprising of 1746.
Clava Cairns
Visit one of the inspirations behind Outlander - the Clava Cairns standing stones. These stones stand proudly at 10 feet tall and are known for being a bronze age burial ground.

The incredibly beautiful Dunrobin Castle traces its origins back to the 13th century, recognised as one of Britain's oldest inhabited houses. Orkney Islands
We head over the sea to Orkney by way of ferry for our last leg of the day. Upon arrival your guide drives you to Kirkwall, where you settle in for the night.

The Italian Chapel
The breathtaking Italian Chapel was built during World War Two using two Nissen huts. The chapel was the dream child of Italian prisoners of war who were based on the island and is now one of Orkney’s best-loved attractions.
Ring of Brodgar
Follow in the footsteps of humans 5000 years ago at this epic stone circle. The Ring of Brodgar is a vast and mysterious archaeological gem, and the most iconic site in the Heart of Neolithic Orkney.
Skara Brae
Visit Skara Brae, an incredibly well-preserved neolithic village consisting of 10 houses. Its existence was only discovered in the 19th century after it was uncovered during a storm. We learn about the peaceful community of farmers and fishermen who once lived there and take in the incredible ocean views which surround it.
Yesnaby Cliffs
A stretch of amazing cliffs, seastacks and rocky beaches.

John O'Groats
We hop on a ferry back to the mainland where our adventurers continue! We arrive in John O’Groats, the northernmost point of Great Britain.
North Coast 500
We continue our journey along the North Coast 500. When it comes to this drive, there’s no such thing as “too far”. Your guide takes you to every unmissable stop and view along the way, so sit back and enjoy.
Smoo Cave
Smoo Cave is one of the top natural attractions on the North Coast 500 and epic example of Scottish geology; from the sea cave’s impressive 50ft entrance to the waterfall chamber deep inside, complete with its own lake and boat trips.
Durness
We make a stop in Durness to visit Sango Sands beach for our lunch break and the chance to enjoy one of Scotland’s beautiful highland beaches.
Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve
Marvel at the scenery and mild-blowing geology of the North-West Highlands with a walk through Knockan Crag Nature Reserve.
Ullapool to Portree

Corrieshalloch Gorge National Nature Reserve
Today we head for the land of faeries; Skye! Our first stop of the day is at Corrieshalloch Gorge, one of the most impressive gorges in the UK. The gorge was formed from melted glacial water and stands approximately 1.5 km long, 60m deep, and 10m wide.
Eilean Donan Castle
Next we stop at the most photographed castle in Scotland, Eilean Donan. Eilean Donan Castle has links to both clans MacKenzie and MacRae, and is the perfect place to stop before today’s final destination – Skye.
Portree
We arrive in Skye in time for lunch, stopping at the island’s largest settlement Portree with its charming high street and local eateries.
The Old Man of Storr
When it comes to cool geology, this natural wonder is the absolute pinnacle. Standing tall on Skye’s ancient landslip, the Old Man of Storr is such a poser. Sometimes hidden by mist, this is a popular hangout for mischievous fairies.
Kilt Rock
Soak up the iconic view of Kilt Rock, a rugged cliff which resembles – you’ve guessed it – a kilt. Marvel at the breathtaking Mealt Waterfall as it runs into the ocean.

Time to board the ferry from Armadale to Mallaig. Remember to look out for some wildlife!
Glenfinnan Viaduct
The Jacobite Steam Train and Glenfinnan Viaduct have shot to worldwide fame since starring in the Harry Potter films, and whether you’re a fan or not, a ride on this classic train is an experience like no other. The West Highland Line between Mallaig and Fort William is famous for its wildly beautiful scenery and dreamy sands of the west coast. The train steams over the 21 arches of the Glenfinnan Viaduct with views across the stunning Loch Shiel, where Bonnie Prince Charlie famously landed in August 1745. Along the coast, you can see the silhouette of the Small Isles, and the bonnie beaches at Arisaig and Morar. You’ll quickly understand why it’s been voted the most scenic rail journey in the world.
Glencoe
Glencoe is dominated by majestic mountains which completely contrast the vast and flat expanse of its neighbouring Rannoch Moor. Buachaille Etive Mòr, which overlooks the moor, is a bonnie brute of a mountain, and a fond favourite with photographers. Your guide will take you through Glencoe’s sad history; you will truly feel like you have been transported through time.

St Conan's Kirk
St. Conan’s Kirk, which sits on the banks of Loch Awe. Built between 1881 and 1886, St. Conan’s sits amongst an enchanting forest and is the heart of Dalmally’s local community.
Kilchurn Castle
Kilchurn Castle was built in the mid-1400s by Sir Colin Campbell, the 1st Lord of Glenorchy. Today the castle is derelict and sits dramatically on a rocky peninsula.

The Kelpies & The Helix
The Kelpies are a stunning spectacle of modern engineering, designed by Scottish artist Andy Scott. Kelpies are mythological beasts in Scottish folklore, and this fantastic equine landmark is the largest of its kind in the world, “neighing” at a height of 30 meters and weighing a mighty 300 tonnes.

5.00What an amazing holiday. Have experienced so much of the Highlands in 8 days. Ticked places off my bucket list like Battlefield of Culloden and The Kelpies. Even in the rain, the north west coast is stunningly beautiful. Steve our tour guide was so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. His tips ensured we got the best out of everything and his music and anec dotes kept us amused on the 1500 mile trip. His passion for Scotland is infectious. Would recommend to anyone.

5.00Just completed the most beautiful trip of the highlands. Every destination, accommodation and little stops were truly wonderful. There was not a moment where I was disappointed. Scotland and the Highlands is truly mesmerising. An extra special thankyou to Steve, the best tour guide to make this trip even more wonderful. The knowledge, passion, laughs and care that Steve provided, helped make this trip the best experience and holiday ever.

5.00This 8-day tour was fantastic! It was very diverse and well organized—we saw so many amazing places and had a very good time throughout the trip. If you want to explore the Scottish Highlands and experience the NC500, I highly recommend this tour. And make sure to ask for tour guide Steve—he made the experience even more enjoyable!

5.00Just back from a wonderful 8 day tour of the Highlands. We got to see beautiful scenery, quaint seaside towns, historical sites and participate in some local folklore. Our tour guide, Laurie, was amazing and provided us with insight, anecdotes and a top-notch playlist along the way. She brought our group together and we are all leaving as friends!

5.00We had an absolutely wonderful experience on our Highland Explorer Tour with Laurie. The trip gave us such a great sense of the Highlands and Scotland as a whole. We were incredibly lucky with the weather — only 2 out of 8 days had solid rain, while 5 days were sunny and beautiful. At times you almost forgot you were in Scotland. One of the best parts of the tour was our small group of only 6 people. We had plenty of room on the bus, which made the long drives very comfortable, and it also gave us the chance to really get to know everyone along the way. Laurie was an excellent guide. She shared fascinating stories, legends, and history throughout the trip, and I learned so much about Scotland, its culture, and many of its famous historical figures. You could tell she genuinely cared about making the experience enjoyable for everyone and really listened to what people were interested in. She did a great job balancing the group’s different interests and making sure everyone had a memorable experience. The small coastal villages we stayed in were charming, and we especially enjoyed spending our evenings exploring them. Laurie also had a fun playlist for the bus rides, which made the longer drives pass quickly and added to the atmosphere of the trip. Overall, this tour exceeded my expectations, and I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to experience the beauty, history, and spirit of the Scottish Highlands.

5.00We had a wonderful time on our 8 day tour with Highland Explorer Tours. Although we drove over 1100 miles during the trip, we never felt like we were in the van too long, because we stopped every hour or two, and our driver/guide, Ali P., told stories about the places we were visiting, and we also enjoyed listening to and talking about her playlists. The scenery on the Northcoast 500 was stunning. We saw so many beautiful and interesting places each day. Although the van held 16, we had 13 people in the group, so it was very comfortable. Our group got along very well, and it was interesting to talk to people from all over, and we had a lot of laughs. The tour did involve a fair amount of walking. The guest houses we stayed in were a 15-20 minute walk to the restaurants. Also, since we didn’t know where we were staying in advance (and our group was split into two different guest houses in all but one place), and we also didn’t know what time we would get to our lodging each night, we were unable to make reservations in advance. Ali made sure to point out different restaurant recommendations when we arrived in each town, but a few times, they were fully booked, and it sometimes took a few tries to find a place to have dinner. Also, our first night in Kirkwall, we arrived late, so we stopped in Tesco in the afternoon to grab sandwiches, which we ate in our room that night. This was fine with us, and we also liked that we were on our own for lunches and dinners, so we could choose what we liked, rather than having everyone eat at a specific place all together, like many other tour companies do. Others might prefer to know exactly where they are eating each night, but we liked that only breakfasts were included in the tour price. We also appreciated that Ali took us to a few places that were not on the itinerary, like Loch Ness and Eilean Donan Castle. Overall, it was a great trip, and I would recommend Highland Explorer Tours.
