The Clarke Ranges rise steeply behind the coast, and at their peak sits Eungella National Park, home to the longest continuous stretch of subtropical rainforest in Australia and one of the country's most reliable spots to see wild platypus.
This eco-certified small-group day tour departs Airlie Beach at 10am and climbs through the Pioneer Valley, stopping for a famous Pinnacle Pie at the Pinnacle Family Hotel before continuing on to Broken River, where completely wild platypus move through the creek.
Your guide holds EcoGuide Certification from Ecotourism Australia, positioning the group at the viewing platform and talking you through what you're seeing. Platypus sightings here are common.
On the way home you'll stop at the Eungella Sky Window for cheese and wine, then head back through the Pioneer Valley and along the coast, returning to Airlie Beach around 4pm.

Fantastic day trip to observe the Platypus! What a great moment to share with these amazing endemic creatures. Our guide Cara was very knowledgeable and a pleasure to be with. All went very well and the road on the way to the National Park is also enjoyable to discover the beautiful landscapes of the countryside with wonderful views on the valley. Thanks again to Cara and D’Artagnan for all! It is definitively worths it !

A great tour, lovely informative guide Cara, we got to see the many different scenery’s on our way to view the platypus in their natural habitat. Stoping to have a delicious pie, mushy peas chips and gravy lunch at the Pinnacle Hotel, it was delicious. The highlight was seeing the platypus …. I recommend this tour

This is a wonderful change of scene to the water/reef related activity that are usually associated with Airlie Beach: our knowledgeable, energetic, fun and caring guide Cara drove us through the beautiful hinterland and up through the rainforest to Eungella National Park, where we actually spotted a platypus! Along the way we learned about local history and flora and fauna. We stopped for fantastic homemade pies for lunch, enjoyed views of the lush hinterland valleys from an old chalet, visited a bat colony and hiked through the rainforest. Thanks for the lovely day, Cara! Treating us with your home made muffins and Easter eggs was very special!

The platypus-spotting tour was absolutely amazing. We were lucky enough to see a platypus, which was truly special. We also enjoyed a beautiful walk with Cara, our guide, who was fantastic and shared so much interesting information about the rainforest and its incredible wonders. Besides the platypus, we spotted wildlife such as a kookaburra, many turtles, and bats. Cara also stopped so we could take photos of the stunning national park from a breathtaking lookout point. We also had time for a short stop to pick some delicious, juicy mangoes, which was a lovely surprise. To top it all off, we enjoyed sausages just like at a real Australian BBQ. A wonderful, well-organized tour for everybody that I would highly recommend!
