From Herzl Square and the Great Synagogue we begin the guided walk in the Jewish Quarter, including major landmarks of the city’s World War II ghetto of 1944.
Great / Central Synagogue (Nagy Zsinagoga)
Stop at the Dohány Street Synagogue, also known as the Great Synagogue is a historical building in Erzsébetváros, the 7th district of Budapest, Hungary. It is the largest synagogue in Europe, seating 3,000 people and is a centre of Neolog Judaism. You will discover not only why this synagogue is unique architecturally, but also find out about the fate of Hungarian Jewry at the time of the Second World War, as well as learning how many internationally famous personages were Hungarian Jews.

5.00I had an incredible experience with Petra as my tour guide in Budapest. She arrived at my hotel right on time and was extremely informative. Her knowledge of the Jewish history in Budapest was outstanding. She took me to the Great Synagogue and several other synagogues, explaining everything in deep detail. We also visited the Danube River to see the bronze shoes. The day was perfectly organized, and the entire history she shared was so moving. I highly recommend Petra—she was simply excellent.

It’s not just a tour — it’s a journey through history, culture, and deeply moving human stories. Walking through the Jewish Quarter, you don’t just see the landmarks, you begin to understand what happened here and why it still matters today. Our guide was exceptional. The way they connected historical facts with personal stories made everything feel real and relatable, not distant or textbook-like. You could feel the weight of history, especially at places like the Shoes on the Danube Bank. Visiting the Dohány Street Synagogue was a highlight — an incredible place with so much history and meaning behind it. What really stood out is the quality of the experience. 1.00We were all very disappointed with our tour. Our promised itinerary was never delivered; we only saw two of the three synagogues, never went to the shoes memorial, nor had the opportunity to taste flodini. Our guide was excellent - very knowledgeable, personable, and easy to understand. Another issue was that we never received the senior discount as advertised. After numerous calls to Viator agents, we were told that they “would get back to us,” but they never did. We feel we were wrongly overcharged (especially since we never experienced the entire itinerary), and would not recommend this tour.
