Old Port
In the Middle Ages, the port of Genoa was a vital hub for maritime trade, thanks to its strategic location and the development of infrastructure such as the pier and shipyards. Active as early as the 6th century BC, the port became a major commercial crossroads for the Maritime Republic of Genoa, attracting merchants and craftsmen involved in shipbuilding and repair.
Palazzo Di San Giorgio
Palace od St. Giorge is one of Genoa’s most historic buildings, originally constructed in 1260. Located near the old port, it once served as the headquarters of the powerful Bank of Saint George, one of the oldest banks in the world.

We participated in the guided tour of the historic center of Genoa with Polina. The guide proved very knowledgeable, providing clear explanations about the medieval history of the city and the importance of noble families. The route was respected as described: we walked through the characteristic alleys, saw from the outside the House of Columbus and paused in the main squares, including Piazza San Lorenzo. The duration of about three hours is adequate and allows you to have a good overview without becoming too heavy. Polina was able to manage the group well, keeping a good pace and answering questions precisely. Very helpful the inclusion of the ticket for public transport, which allowed us to reach a vantage point to admire the view of the harbor without excessive effort. In conclusion, it is a tour that I would recommend to those visiting Genoa for the first time and want a guide who offers a solid historical and cultural framework of the city. It is not a simple walk, but a well-structured introduction.

We recently visited Genoa as part of our Mediterranean cruise and booked a half-day walking tour directly from the cruise terminal and we’re so glad we did! As a family with two kids (ages 10 and 13), we were looking for something educational but not too intense, and this tour hit the mark perfectly. Our guide met us right at the port entrance, which was super convenient and stress-free. From there, we strolled into the historic city center, which was only about a 10–15 minute walk. Along the way, our guide shared interesting facts about Genoa’s maritime history, its role in trade, and famous figures like Christopher Columbus. We loved exploring the narrow alleys and the beautiful architecture, including San Lorenzo Cathedral and the old palaces. The guide made sure to keep the pace comfortable and included a few short breaks. The tour was informative, family-friendly, and just the right mix of history, culture and local curiosities. Highly recommended if you’re coming in by cruise and want to make the most of your day without feeling rushed.
