Sengan-en
Senganen Garden (仙巌園), also known as Isoteien (磯庭園), is a Japanese style landscape garden along the coast north of downtown Kagoshima. One of the garden's most striking features is its use of Sakurajima and Kagoshima Bay as borrowed scenery. The garden also includes small ponds, streams, shrines and a bamboo grove. Senganen was constructed in 1658 by the wealthy Shimazu Clan, one of the most powerful feudal clans during the Edo Period (1603-1867). The Shimazu ruled the Satsuma domain (present day Kagoshima) for almost 700 years until the end of the feudal age in 1868. They continued to be influential into the modern era as some of the earliest adopters of Western science and technology.
Reimeikan
The Reimeikan Museum (黎明館) is dedicated to local history and culture. On three spacious floors it presents a wide variety of exhibits that cover the span of Kagoshima's history from ancient to modern times. There are a few interesting models, such as a large diorama of downtown Kagoshima at the beginning of the Showa Period (1926-1989) and a small scale model of a village from the middle ages. The museum was built on the former site of the local castle, known as Kagoshima or Tsurumaru Castle, and is surrounded by parts of the former moat and stone walls. The museum and castle ruins are located at the base of Mount Shiroyama, which literally means "castle mountain" in Japanese. Within the vicinity of the museum there are a few other museums and cultural attractions. One of the most popular is a statue of the local hero Saigo Takamori, a leader from the Meiji Restoration of the late 1860s. Saigo is believed to have died in combat on Shiroyama mountain.

5.00We had a great day with Tashi.. he is a very friendly guy who communicated very well prior to the trip to schedule our itinerary. Unfortunately it started raining in the afternoon and ultimately we decided to skip our last stop.

5.00Kagoshima was an unexpected highlight of our trip to Japan. We were so impressed with the city. Shinju was our tour guide, and he arranged samurai armor wearing and bow and arrow experiences for our kids. It was one of our favorite experiences of our entire trip to Japan. Shinju was very informative and spoke excellent English. We had a fantastic time and learned so much. This was a great tour!

5.00Mio was awesome! She took care to bring us little presents from Kagoshima and had an English book for us to read about the Meiji Restoration. She was very knowledgeable and had excellent English. An awesome and excellent experience. Only downside was we didn’t have as long in port as we originally thought. So she couldn’t take us everywhere!

5.00We had a wonderful time in Kagoshima. Shinju was an excellent tour guide and we loved all the places he took us. I especially loved visiting the samurai village in Chiran. It was so interesting to learn about them and see how they lived. We took the fairy over to the active volcano and got a good view from the observatory. Then, we went to a park where they have foot baths and dipped our feet in the hot baths. We also visited the kamikaze museum where they pay tribute to all the young men who died in a one way mission during WW II.

5.00Our host and tour guide SHINJU was just fantastic, starting with the pick-up at the cruise terminal and then taking us to the interesting sites in Kagoshima - including the volcano, the exciting Senganen garden and the observatory overlooking Kagoshima and the opposite volcano. Very interesting history, culture and city life. Thank You Shinju for such a great day, and also the flexibility on accomodating our wishes. We loved it!

5.00We hired a private tour for our cruise stop in Kagoshima. We were so lucky to be assigned Shinju. He was so wonderful sharing details about the city, history, and key japanese phrases. Sinju was so conscious about my food allergies at lunch, I knew I was in good hands. He even shared a picture he took of when the volcano exploding that is now on our fridge.

5.00We had a great day with our guide Shinju for our port tour. He had a great itinerary planned to incorporate the highlights of Kagoshima. The van was very comfortable with an excellent driver. I would highly recommend Shinju and would definitely use him for future trips.

5.00Excellent communication with Tachi before the tour, he met our group of 14 friends at the exit gate and took us on our 8 hour private tour all around Kagoshima. He gave us a list and we were able to choose what we wanted to see. Tachi arranged for us to go to a Wagyu Speciality Restaurant for lunch for an extra charge, Amazing, everyone Loved it.😋 Tachi went above and beyond to give our group a great time. 100% Recommended.
