Sun Moon Lake Hotel - Mountain View Room, Sun Moon Lake or similar
Sun Moon Lake
Meet your guide at the hotel lobby, and then head for the heart of Taiwan island: Sun Moon Lake. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the ever-changing scenery through the window during the 3-hour ride. Nestled in the heart of Taiwan’s Nantou County at an elevation of 748 meters, Sun Moon Lake is the island’s largest and most enchanting alpine lake. Its unique name is derived from its distinct shape: the eastern side resembles a round sun, while the western side curls into a slender crescent moon, separated by the sacred Lalu Island. Renowned as one of Taiwan’s "Eight Beautiful Scenic Attractions," the lake is celebrated for its ever-changing scenery, where morning mists create a dreamy veil over the emerald waters and golden sunsets paint the surrounding peaks. Beyond its natural splendor, the area serves as a rich cultural crossroads, home to the indigenous Thao people and a sanctuary for significant historical landmarks.
Wen Wu Temple
Perched majestically on the northern mountainside of Sun Moon Lake, Wenwu Temple is a grand example of Northern Chinese palace-style architecture, recognizable by its striking golden-yellow roof and intricate stone carvings. Originally built in 1938 and meticulously reconstructed in 1969, the temple uniquely honors both the "Civil Saint" Confucius and the "Military Saint" Lord Guan within a single sprawling complex. A major highlight for visitors is the "Stairway to Heaven," a steep path of 366 steps leading up from the lake—one for each day of the year plus a leap day— each engraved with the names of historical figures and traditional solar terms. Travelers are drawn here not only for its spiritual significance in seeking success and wisdom but also for the breathtaking panoramic views of the turquoise waters offered from its ornate observation decks.
Yidashao Pier
As the ancestral home and final settlement of the Thao people—Taiwan’s smallest officially recognized indigenous tribe—Ita Thao Village serves as the vibrant cultural heart of the Sun Moon Lake region. Formerly known as Barawbaw, the village offers a sensory journey through its bustling "Old Street," where visitors can sample authentic indigenous flavors such as millet wine, wild boar sausages, and locally grown Assam black tea.
Ci'en Pagoda
Standing as an iconic landmark atop the summit of Mt. Shabalan, Ci’en Pagoda was commissioned by the late President Chiang Kai-shek in 1971 as a profound memorial to his mother. The nine-story, octagonal Chinese-style structure reaches a height of 46 meters, which, when combined with the mountain's elevation, places its peak at a perfect 1,000 meters above sea level. Accessing the pagoda involves a gentle 700-meter walk through a lush forest trail—famous for firefly sightings in late spring —leading to the base of the tower. Once at the top, visitors can ring the massive ceremonial bell and enjoy an unrivaled 360-degree vista where the "Sun" and "Moon" shapes of the lake are clearly visible, perfectly aligned with the neighboring mountains and the sacred Lalu Island.
Xuanzhuang Temple
Xuanzhuang Temple is a serene Buddhist sanctuary built in 1965 to enshrine the sacred bone relics (Śarīra) of the legendary Tang Dynasty monk, Master Xuanzang. The temple’s architecture is a refined imitation of the Tang Dynasty style, characterized by simple, elegant lines and smooth square floor tiles that exude a sense of tranquility and ancient grace. Outside the main hall, large murals depict Xuanzang’s arduous 17-year pilgrimage to India to bring Buddhist scriptures back to China, a journey that significantly shaped the development of East Asian Buddhism. Located along the "Qinglong Mountain Ridge," the temple offers a quiet, contemplative alternative to the more crowded lakeside sites, providing a meditative atmosphere and a direct view across the water to the heart of the lake.
Xiangshan Visitor Center
A masterpiece of contemporary architecture, the Xiangshan Visitor Center was designed by renowned Japanese architect Norihiko Dan with the guiding philosophy of "integrating the building into the landscape." The structure features unique wood-patterned concrete and two massive, curved wings that stretch out like a pair of embracing arms, creating a semi-open space that frames the lake without obstructing the natural horizon. Its grassy rooftops allow the building to blend seamlessly into the surrounding greenery, while the infinity pools on the grounds appear to merge directly with the lake’s waters. Beyond its stunning design, the center serves as a hub for tourism and administration, offering interactive exhibits on local ecology and an elegant café where visitors can enjoy world-class views through floor-to-ceiling glass.

BREAKFAST
Breakfast
Lukang Historic Center
Wake up to a serene morning overlooking the misty waters of Sun Moon Lake. After enjoying breakfast with a view, you will check out and leave the mountains behind. Today, your private guide will take you on a journey through time, traveling from the spiritual heart of Central Taiwan to the historic streets of Lukang, before arriving at the vibrant southern metropolis of Kaohsiung.
Lugang Longshan Temple
Step into a sanctuary of peace and architectural mastery. Often compared to Beijing’s Forbidden City on a smaller scale, this is Taiwan’s most beautifully preserved Qing Dynasty Buddhist temple. As you walk through its courtyards, your guide will point out the spectacular spider-web caisson ceiling (built entirely without nails) and the intricate wood carvings that have stood the test of time for over two centuries.
Lugang Old Street
Immerse yourself in history as you wander down the winding, red-brick alleys of Lukang's old commercial district. Once a bustling, wealthy port town, it now feels like a living museum. Walk past traditional courtyard homes, browse artisan shops selling handmade fans and traditional pastries, and discover the famous, incredibly narrow "Breast-Touching Alley" —a quirky testament to ancient town planning.
Tianhou Temple
Pay your respects at one of Taiwan’s most historically significant temples, dedicated to Mazu, the Goddess of the Sea. This lively temple features incredible stone pillars carved with dragons and smoke-stained ceilings from centuries of incense offerings. It offers an authentic look into the deep spiritual roots of Taiwan's early coastal settlers.

BREAKFAST
Breakfast
Kenting National Park
Fuel up with breakfast before embarking on an exciting day-trip to the southernmost tip of Taiwan. Today you leave the city behind for Kenting National Park, a stunning tropical peninsula famous for its vibrant turquoise waters, dramatic coral formations, and windswept coastal cliffs. Enjoy a scenic coastal drive as the landscape shifts into a true island paradise.
Maobitou Park
Visit this incredible coastal viewing platform named after a fallen coral rock that looks exactly like a crouching cat. Here, you will witness the raw power of nature through unique geological formations, including sea-eroded caves, trenches, and beautiful coral reefs stretching across the shoreline.
Your coastal exploration continues to this striking 18-meter-high coral stone rising dramatically from the sea. Shaped like a massive sail catching the wind, it is one of Kenting’s most photographed landmarks. From certain angles, the rock also bears an uncanny resemblance to the profile of US President Richard Nixon!
Eluanbi
Walk through lush seaside trails to visit the world-famous Eluanbi Lighthouse. Known as the "Light of East Asia," this unique armed lighthouse was fortified with a trench and gun holes during the 19th century to protect it from local tribes. Stand at the edge of the park to witness where the Taiwan Strait, the Pacific Ocean, and the Bashi Channel meet.
Longpan Park
Prepare to have your breath taken away as you step onto the vast, windswept limestone grasslands of Longpan. Perched high above the Pacific Ocean, this expansive plateau offers dizzying panoramic views of rugged cliffs dropping vertically into crashing white waves below.
Hengchun Old Town
Wrap up your tropical day with a dose of history in Hengchun. This charming town boasts Taiwan’s most remarkably well-preserved Qing Dynasty city walls. Walk through the historic South Gate and explore the bustling local streets, which blends traditional southern Taiwanese lifestyle with a trendy, laid-back surf town vibe.
BREAKFAST

Kaohsiung
Your final day blends Kaohsiung's iconic lakeside architecture with a deep-dive into Tainan—Taiwan’s oldest city, former imperial capital, and undisputed street-food capital—before a smooth private ride back to Taipei.

Dragon Tiger Tower

Chihkan Tower (Fort Provintia)
Travel north to Tainan and step onto the historic grounds of Chikan Tower. Originally built as Fort Provintia by the Dutch in 1653, this site has transformed over centuries. Today, beautiful Chinese-style pavilions sit directly on top of the original red-brick Dutch foundations, surrounded by manicured gardens and imperial stone turtles.
YongLe Market
Dive into Taiwan’s ultimate foodie paradise ! This vibrant culinary crossroads is where locals queue up for legendary, multi-generational street snacks. We did a four day tour of Taiwan and were very disappointed in the hotel selection, which Edison did not disclose ahead of time. The mildew smell was overpowering, the food was old and there was nothing else in walking distance, the bed was hard and flat and our room overlooked a parking lot despite the hotel being on a lake. So, we decided to book our own hotel for the last two nights and Edison did not offer us a credit for the hotels they booked for us. This is a big company and I am sure they have some leverage over the hotels, so they probably cancelled our rooms and pocketed the money. The only reason I did not give them one star is because the tour guide and driver were very nice people. I would not use this company.

This was an overall amazing experience and tour! We were able to see and do everything on the itinerary....and then some. We couldn't have asked for a more knowledgeable, kind, generous, FUN tour guide than Mr. Fred Chang!! He was the absolute best part of our experience. He introduced us to the "real" Taiwan, and made sure we enjoyed every minute. He is TRULY a TREASURE!

Allan is the best guide we've ever had. We were a group of four Spaniards on a 5-day trip in Taiwan. The experience was amazing for the country but especially thanks to Allan and the driver

This was perhaps one of the best tours I have taken. The tour was beyond my expectations from the places I saw to the food to the hotels. My guide and driver were great and went above and beyond to make the trip memorable. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for tours in Taiwan.

My cousin and I took our 88 year old mothers (twin sisters) on this private 4 day tour and we all loved the tour and the sights. I specifically asked for tour guide Coco, whom we previously had for my 3 days tour in 2023. Coco and our driver were very attentive to our mom's needs and provided excellent service. Coco knew we loved to try local foods and researched for suggestions based on our preferences. We asked the tour to end via the High Speed Rail back to Taipei instead of by car and Harry, our contact at Edison, was very gracious and accommodating. I also used Edison for the rides to and from Taoyuan to our hotel. I would highly recommend Edison and will use them again for our tour to Easter Taiwan next time as well.

Really terrific way to enjoy the eastern coast + center. From top to bottom of the country, the landscape, people, and cuisine are unmatched. Itinerary is a solid balance of nature, native culture, history, food, temples. Many tour highlights—at the top of the list is our guide Joseph Yi. Could not be more knowledgable, kind, responsive. Hotel quality exceeded expectations. If time allows, combine with the west coast tour.

A rainy tour from pineapple factory making our own pineapple cake to rainbow village to the beautiful flower market, it's all fun despite the rain and wind. Thanks to Mr. John Chan, our tour guide, who explained things about the tour and taiwan history that made the tour smooth and lively.

It wasn't much of a guided tour with a fun guide or fun facts, it's more of a personal driver type of trip where it's quiet during the drive. When we got to the destination, most of the time was for exploring on your own, which was fine for me but not very exciting otherwise. The first van and hotel to sun moon lake was very nice but the metro and van in Kaohshiung was not very nice. I traveled solo so the personal van escort and hotel was kinda worth it for me but otherwise I don't think it was worth the money, almost seven hundred for four days. Also the Kaohshiung guide had very bad time management. We were suppose to go to three destinations on the last day and spent forever at the first two places never mentioning we were short on time and towards the end I didn't get to have lunch and literally spent two minutes at the last place and barely made it to the hsr station. The call center was very supportive otherwise I would've given them less ratings.

Wonderfully surprised I was very satisfied with our tour of Taipei and the scenic places that gave inspiration. Our tour guide, Mr John Chan, was such a professional and a gentleman, always making sure our group had what we need beforehand and I'll try to remember the stories he shared while on the road on our bus. Planning a next visit already! Taiwan is as beautiful as its warm-hearted folks.
