Being able to snorkel in the Silfra fissure is a privilege that mother nature literally opened up for us. Silfra is a big 'crack' in the ground located in Thingvellir on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge formed as two tectonic plates move apart from each other.
The benefits of choosing the wetsuit option is you can dive down and have the most unique perspective, seeing above and below the water. This choice is popular for scuba divers who do not have the required certifications for the scuba dive. If you're not a confident swimmer then the drysuit can be a better option.
Prior experience snorkeling/ diving will help you greatly to dive down but is not necessary. You can book the drysuit option on another listing for you or other people in your group for the same time tour.
We always have small groups, 6 people per guide. This allows for a more closer and personal feel. If you have a group of 7 or more you can be together preparing your equipment but in the water some of you will be separate.

Bring a swimsuit and a towel
Minimum age is 12 years, please reach out regarding younger participants & Participants over the age of 65 need to get a physicians approval
Be at minimum 150cm (4’9) tall / maximum 200cm (6’7) tall, and be at minimum 50kg (99 lbs) / maximum 120kg (264 lbs)
Don't wear glasses, instead bring contact lenses or your own prescription mask (if you have one)
Recommended to bring a change of clothes (the drysuit has a very small chance of leaking)
Please dress according to weather - no heal or jeans
All participants heights, weights and age must be provided to local operator. If you do not provide at time of booking, please contact supplier immediately after booking to provide this information
Please note that that dry suits can sometimes feel quite tight and constricting, especially around the neck and wrists
We recommend wearing long thermal underwear and thick wool socks a a base layer under the drysuit
All participants will need to fill out a medical form before participating in the tour. Please find a link to the medical statement on your ticket voucher right after booking the experience to be sure if you qualify.
Note: Each guide can assist one group of up to six participants at a time. Up to three different groups can be present during this activity.

The location of Silfra, where the snorkeling takes place, is within Thingvellir National park. Passengers, while driving through, get a chance to view some of the beautiful nature the national park has to offer
Heading out from your Reykjavík accommodation to Silfra takes about 45 minutes. After greeting your certified guide, you'll get a briefing on the tour and what to expect. Upon arrival, you'll gear up, listen to a safety overview, and head into the glacially flooded fissure known as Silfra. You'll spend around 30–40 minutes in the water before exiting and walking back around 5 minutes walk. You'll then get a chance of warming up with a well earned hot chocolate. We’ll take photos during the snorkeling. Typically 40–100 images, depending on group size and skill level. The photos will be available for download a few days later free of charge. For the wetsuit option, just wear your swimsuit underneath. We recommend bringing thick (preferably wool) socks to help keep your feet warm while snorkeling. We’re the only company offering both wetsuit and drysuit options. This means members of your group can book in wetsuits or drysuits and you will still be in the same group in the water.

5.00I had the pleasure of snorkeling with Ines in a wetsuit in the Silfra Fissure. The pick-up and drop-off from Reykjavik were seamless. My diving guide, Ines, set very clear expectations for a wetsuit versus a drysuit. While I was a solo traveler, I was in a group with 3 other people, and unfortunately one young woman didn’t take her advice to heart. You have to REALLY want to be in a wetsuit to choose that option. My feet were numb, face was numb, but I survived! It was a bucket-list item that has been checked-off in the best way. I was thoroughly impressed with not only Ines’ preparation but also how she pivoted to keep the entire group safe while one person had a panic attack in the water. I would highly recommend Adventure Vikings as consummate professionals.

5.00This was a great time! Enough mix of exciting and funny to keep it a fun experience. Anil was a great guide and kept us all feeling very safe and secure, explained the experience well before hand so we all felt prepared. Suit is right around the neck on land, though in the water the air in the suit makes the feeling go away- a very cold but great time! Hot chocolate after made the experience too :) photos after we’re both beautiful and hilarious.

5.00Be early for pick up. Here in Iceland, on-time is late. Everything is taken care of. Wetsuits and insulation provided worked perfectly. Hands and face a different story. The experience was surreal and a must do for adventure lovers.

4.00Guide was Nebos and he was amazing! I have always snorkled in warm waters and it was my first time in extreme cold water. It was both exhilarating and not for the light hearted. Although I have swimming experience and love open ocean bodyboarding, this was very eye opening. I did struggle a few times after the start and Nebos was very helpful in making sure I was okay and made sure I was feeling okay and ensured me everything would be alright. His patience helped me calm down and continue to enjoy the spectacular views underwater

4.00I'm glad I did this, it's a cool thing to do and there's nowhere else in the world that you can. But - it's truly so cold! In winter, you need a dry suit (the wetsuit wasn't on the table when I got there), and dry suits are pretty uncomfortable. And there's not a lot to see once you're in the water. However, as a bucket list, once in a lifetime experience, absolutely worth doing and I would recommend.
