Apartheid Museum
Step into the heart of South Africa’s modern history at the Apartheid Museum, widely recognized as one of the world’s foremost museums dedicated to apartheid-era narratives . Opened in 2001 and located within the Gold Reef City complex in Johannesburg, the museum chronicles the rise and fall of apartheid from 1948 to the first democratic elections in 1994 . What You'll Experience 22 indoor and outdoor exhibition areas: Explore powerful themes like Race Classification, Segregation, Mandela’s imprisonment, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and the transition to democracy . Immersive visit experience: Begin with the Pillars of the Constitution courtyard, and enter via segregated access lanes that simulate apartheid-era identity division, followed by the impactful Journeys exhibit with giant photographic figures depicting Johannesburg’s migration history .
Hector Pieterson Museum and Memorial
Explore the moving story of the 1976 Soweto Uprising and the legacy of Hector Pieterson, one of its first child casualties. The museum is uniquely situated just a few steps from where he was fatally shot, and guides visitors through the events of that historic day . Highlights You’ll Experience Memorial Site & Sculpture Begin at the powerful outdoor memorial featuring a bronze sculpture depicting Hector Pieterson being carried by a fellow student with his sister running alongside — based on Sam Nzima’s iconic photo that shocked the world . Immersive Ramp Architecture Walk through a building designed with gently rising ramps and framed windows that deliberately orient you to historical vantage points, such as the nearby Orlando Stadium and former police station . Exhibitions & Visual Media Engage with impactful exhibits that include archival photographs, newspaper articles, television footage, music, chants, and personal and testimonies from survivors. There are not enough stars to rate Mr Thapelo! From the booking communication right through to the end of the tour, the communication was excellent, the logistics were well handled and he is VERY knowledgable, delivering this tour with both care and passion. Weaving facts, history and personal experience, there was a richness that I have not experienced with other operators. As a female traveller I was completely safe, the car was immaculate. I would recommend this tour and Mr Thapelo without hesitation.

The Soweto and Apartheid Museum tour with Roam Africa Tours and Safaris was an unforgettable and deeply moving experience. Our tour guide was knowledgeable, humble, and entertaining. The Apartheid Museum was a very emotional and eye-opening part of the tour. We left with a greater understanding of the country’s history. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Johannesburg!
