Mr. Sawada was pure joy!! I went with my mom and sis during our first trip to Japan. He taught us three main indigo dye patterns and brought out our inner child while we tied up our cloth. Highly recommend this quintessential Japanese art experience and Mr. sawada as sensei!

I was looking for something besides the usual tours and came across this. My husband came along and I think he had more fun than I did! We got there early and were welcomed in and were soon laughing, which went on all afternoon. It was educational and fun and we went home with four beautiful and unique cotton scarves that will be treasured gifts. Highly recommended!!

I chose this activity because while we were doing the castle in the morning, I wanted to have one more activity on the docket and stumbled upon indigo dyeing at Wata-ya. This ended up becoming a highlight of the trip. Sawada-san was so kind and patient, an excellent teacher and a charming host for my friends, my partner, and me. One of our party members spoke Japanese, which made translating questions back and forth much easier, so I do recommend having someone who's at least conversational. This is the perfect activity for a party of four, especially if you want an activity that is slower, gentler, and comes with its own souvenir. I made two scarves and can't wait to wear them. We were grinning ear-to-ear the entire time. The shop itself is also just a lovely spot to sit in. It was built in 1920 and features Zembe-sensei's original artwork, so the visit is worth seeing his craftsmanship alone.

We absolutely loved this experience! Zenbei Sensei was so sweet and spent a long time chatting with us via translation app. He was a fabulous instructor as well and we had a great time dyeing our scarves and tote bag. Would highly recommend this experience to anyone and everyone coming to Himeji, this was our favorite activity in Japan!
