Located 41 km northwest of Phnom Penh, Phnom Udong was Cambodia’s royal capital from 1618 to 1866. This sacred mountain, set on twin hills overlooking the Kandal plains, is crowned with ancient stupas and temples that honor former Khmer kings and house sacred relics.
Visitors climb over 500 stone steps to reach the summit, where stunning structures like the Preah Shakyamuni Chedi, built in 2002 to enshrine Buddha’s relics, shine beside older stupas such as Damrei Sam Poan and Ang Duong. Amid these monuments stands Vihear Preah Edthareus, a war-damaged sanctuary that still carries the marks of Cambodia’s turbulent history.
The site offers sweeping views of rice fields, villages, and the Tonle Sap River, providing a peaceful and spiritual retreat. At the mountain’s base, local vendors offer refreshments, making Udong a perfect cultural day trip from Phnom Penh, rich in history and natural beauty.

5.00Great day accompanied by our savin guide , we appreciated his kindness and explanations along the way as well as his accompaniment to the temples...we participated in the donation of the monks meal , access to a sacred relic of Buddha...Top vehicle, fresh water at will...everything was perfect
