  First, this was one of the highlights of our trip to France (we have been to France many times, but never to the Dordogne). We got lucky with the weather with clear blue skies (it was actually very hot, but we set out early). We did the five castle route …Vitrac to Beynac (actually just past it). Their website says its 16 km .,,which us about 10 miles. It took us 4 hours, including a 1 hour stop for lunch in La Roque. It was very easy, beautiful and relaxing. A month ahead of our visit to the Dordogne I got the name of this canoe rental from our hotel, and also saw it had high reviews. I emailed them a lot of questions about the canoes, how hard the canoeing was, where to stop along the way, and lots more. They were extremely patient with me and very helpful As we are in our late 60’s , we were worried about how hard it would be to row, how the seating would be with my back and legs for several hours in the canoe, and worried about tipping over….none of which we should have been concerned about. The canoes had nice seats with backs and my legs were just fine. There was no issue about stability (we were not standing up in the canoe). The river is very calm and rowing is easy. Many places the river was moving us without much or any rowing. Note: there were a lot of mosquitoes in some areas. We forgot repellant, but as long as you are moving they didn’t seem to bite. Because we started out around 10am, there were very few other canoes on the river….making it a personal, very relaxing, experience Highly recommend going early. Because of how the river meanders, many times we were the only ones on our part of the river. We noticed later, on the shuttle back to the Canoës Loisirs camp, tons of canoes on the river…from all different companies. I did not realize how big and professional the organization was till we arrived at their camp. Plenty of parking (at least when we got there). Most people were just booking right there (we booked a month ahead), so we had to wait in line a bit just to check in. (the fellow at the counter was new and was very confused by our prepayment…but he asked someone and sorted it out) Then we went over to the canoes to get one of the …deck hands I guess you would call them…who helped us get our equipment, put on our life vests, give us instructions, and take a photo! Very nice, helpful fellow. One thing they really did not tell us…but my son who kayaks did…how to row efficiently! Using your torso not your arms. Hard to explain so google a video on it. Our plan was to stop half way, in La Roque , and have lunch . We asked the fellow who helped us with our gear, and we didn’t really get a good idea where we could pull the canoe over in La Roque. Having driven by La Rogue, I know there is a big seawall. ..but lots of people pulled up on the sand on the other side of the river . So really had no idea what to do or where to stop So we took it slow , and close to shore, as we approached La Roque. Since we were early on the river, no one was parked yet on the town side of the river. I kept looking for openings in the trees but nothing looked right. …or safe. Then as we started to go past La Roque, I saw what looked like a boat ramp coming down the side of the sea wall from the town. I didn’t know if we were allowed there or not…but we went and pulled our canoe up onto the ramp….and another couple just behind us did the same thing. When we came back an hour later , after lunch, there were several canoes parked on the rocks or on the ramp. Our timing , leaving around 10 and getting to La Roque around noon, was perfect. We walked around the town a bit, got some sandwiches, and walked over to the park and ate at a picnic table looking out at the river and other canoes. We also knew that the stopping point was just past Beynac. The person who got us our equipment mentioned the number of bridges we would go under, and how their return area was just past a certain bridge (I cannot recall if it was 5th or what). So it’s a big past Beynac but once you come around the bend after that last bridge, you will see it and signs on the left bank. The shuttle goes on the hour, and I think the last one is 6pm. You turn your canoe and gear in, and there is a mini bus to take you back Its all very well organized and simple , from start to finish. I don’t know about the other canoe rental agencies, but this one seemed to have the most boats on the river, stops several place on the river and terrific staff. I highly recommend using Canoës Loisirs

  Beautiful river and sites. Pickup, sign-in and launch were efficient and easy. The return was not as clear, this being our first time. We sat in a very warm bus a bit too long at the return pickup place. Overall a very nice experience!

  After seamlessly catching their shuttle in Sarlat, we floated down the river for a delightful canoe ride. Staff were helpful & fantastic! The trip was amazing! We’ll do it again!

  The staff is patient, attentive, and responds quickly to questions. When a problem arises, they truly try to find an effective solution. Very satisfied! I recommend the yellow canoes and Viator to everyone!

  

  

  

• Experience of a lifetime!

  This trip was unforgettable! Travelled to Sarlat by train 0615 from Bergerac .. was shuttled to base camp and canoed for 2.5 hours down river. The scenery was sublime and you have time to picnic or find a cafe on the way. Was given a lift back to Sarlat station by le Boss .. a highly entertaining experience too.! Thanks to all of you for making it a truly exceptional experience! Don’t let age get in the way .. I am 69 and let the river do the work! Perhaps yiu could opt for four bridges rather than five if you have doubts that it may be too much. It’s a long way from bridge four to five!

  Be ready for some awesome countryside as you paddle down the Dordogne. There are a couple of spots to stop to pur have food but I would recommend bringing a lunch for a picnic on the shore.

  A wonderful experience! Great views of countryside and castles, very peaceful and relaxing. Did start in Vitrac and ended in Beynac which was just the right length. Shuttle worked well. Loisers was responsive though very little info or instruction given at start of trip.

  

  

  

• Wonderful Family Trip

  We are a family of 5 with kids 12, 10, and 6. We had two canoes; it was great for a family. You are going with the current so it isn’t too difficult, especially if you take the 10am trip. Make sure to get there 15 minutes before your scheduled time to get checked in. We went from Carsac to Beynac, and it was wonderful. Bring a snack and skip the snack shacks — that will give you time to explore La Roque which is wonderful.

  It’s worth a stroll in the medieval quarter. It is beautiful, it is clean. There is plain restaurant and terrace to stop.
