The Taroko Gorge was formed about 250 million years ago. Four million years ago, the island of Taiwan was formed by the collision of plates. Due to long-term erosion by streams and crustal arching, a vertical canyon was formed. Its special topography is also called Taiwan "Grand Canyon".

Its distinctive terrain is also referred to as the "Grand Canyon of Taiwan." Well-known scenic trails such as Swallow Grotto (Yanzikou) , Tunnel of Nine Turns, Changchun Shrine, Buluowan , and the Xiaozhuilu Trail are all part of this magnificent landscape.
