Visiting Lonar Crater Lake is like stepping into a living museum where Earth, space, and mythology converge. This rare natural wonder — formed by a meteor impact over 50,000 years ago — is one of only a handful of such craters in the world, and the only one set in basalt rock. Its shimmering green waters are not only scientifically priceless, often compared to conditions on Mars, but are also steeped in Hindu legends of Lord Vishnu’s battle with the demon Lonasura. Surrounded by ancient temples, migratory birds, and an eerie, otherworldly landscape, Lonar offers travelers an experience that is both spiritual and cosmic. For those who crave more than just monuments, it is a hidden gem of India where history, science, and storytelling meet.

Lonar Lake
One of Earth's greatest cosmic secrets, the Lonar Crater Lake, is only three hours from Aurangabad. It was created 50,000 years ago when an outer-space asteroid struck the Deccan plateau. Today, this emerald-green lake is a breathtaking blend of science, legend, and natural beauty. This day trip departs Aurangabad and takes you past old forts and undulating farmlands, down into an unearthly-feeling crater, past enigmatic temples associated with epic mythology, and along seas that scientists liken to those on Mars. The opportunity to stand where mythology and astronomy converge and Earth speaks its cosmic past makes it more than just a tourism excursion.

We had a very enjoyable visit to Lonar Lake. It’s about a two and a half hour drive from the centre of Aurangabad/Chhatrapi Sambhaji Nagar. Our guide, Pankaj, was excellent. He was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Lonar Lake itself is a fascinating place. The tour entails a walk of between four and five km in total and the local guide pointed out several wildlife highlights including the footprints of a leopard. I must add that here are some quite steep steps at the beginning and end of the walk.. We had a good lunch and also visited a local notable temple.

I had a free day in Aurangabad and had already seen Ajanta and Ellora. I saw a tour about an ancient meteorite crater on the internet which was possible as a day tour. The tour was amazing. The lake was formed many thousand years ago after a meteorite crash. Our guide was brilliant and helped us explain the strange composition of the water here. We also saw some exotic water birds . It is a great way to spend a day

We are in Aurangabad and heard about this company that does immersive tours. So we sound up for a visit to Lonar to explore cosmic mysteries as the tour mentioned! It was indeed a spectacular experience. Our guide Pankaj was amazing and not just told us about the meteorite crash and strange water of the lake, he aerials showed us the weird composition of the water in this lake. We had a thrilling walk inside the crater as well. Very highly recommended.
