Originally built between 1406 and 1420 during the Ming dynasty, the complex comprises 980 surviving buildings and is the largest collection of ancient wooden architecture in the world. It gets its name from its strict historical rules: access was strictly limited to the emperor, the imperial family, and their servants, making it a completely "forbidden" world to commoners. You’ll spend several hours wandering around this amazing example of Imperial architecture and learning about the history of the palace.
