Amongst the numerous legendary Indian women who dot our chequered history, Rani Ahilyabai Holkar strides like a colossus leaving her indelible footprints on the sands of time in no uncertain manner Yesterday visiting her fort (now a heritage hotel) brought her much closer than the screen actors Aditi Jaltare and Aetashaa Sansgiri a much viewed and loved serial on Sony network. In fact the Mrs. who has been an avid viewer filled in many gaps along with the guide on her early as well as later part of her existence from 1725 to 1795. Her journey from her birthplace Ahmednagar to ascending the throne (after the death of her husband and then son) to rule Indore state brought alive the sterling qualities that made her what she was. Being a widow her reign was fraught with rebellion from the Peshwas (Raghunathrao) which she quelled with both the sword and pen. Putting him in a dilemma of becoming infamous either in a win or defeat she ensured that the takeover effort was foiled effectively. With Lord Shiva as her idol and God she dispensed justice with effortless ease and used her personal wealth in the rehabilitation of 28 temples across India. Her work ethic, disregard for personal comfort, compassion for the poor & needy, military capabilities as well as administrative skills lead her to be bestowed the title “Devi” a rare honour that reverberates even today in the university named after her. The temple and the fort visit made for a compelling experience that made me feel proud of our rich heritage and culture. Yet again!
