We proceed northeast through Mandal Ovo and then to Saikhan Ovo. In the middle of the Gobi desert mountains, nestling on the south and north banks of the "Ongi" river lies nothing more than the ruins of the Ongi Monastery. It was one of the most important monasteries, with four religious institutions and housing over one thousand monks at its height, until its destruction in 1939 during anti-religious purges in Mongolia. The best time to go hiking to catch the spectacular view from this sacred mountain is in the evening.
