Wadi Dawkha
Our certified tour guide will pick you up from your hotel in an air-conditioned four-wheel drive jeep. Afterwards you will pass through the marvelous landscape of Salalah and have the opportunity to admire the biodiversity nature has to offer. You will drive through several camel herds until you reach the first stop of the tour: the Wadi Dawkah. The large natural garden and UNESCO Heritage Site is the habitat of around 1.200 frankincense trees and source of the world famous Dhofari Frankincense. Of course, your guide will explain everything about the cultivation of frankincense, the different varieties and uses.
Your journey proceeds to the city Thumrait to have some traditional arabic coffee (qahwah) with dates. Thumrait is known as a famous Bedouin settlement and played a major role in times of the ancient Frankincense Trading Route which ran from South of Oman to the Mediterranean Sea.
The city of Shisr is the next attraction on the tour into the desert and is surrounded by numerous legends. The most famous dubs Shisr as the legendary city of Ubar, which was once an important city as a crossroads of caravan routes that made it rich through trade in frankincense, spices, coppers and probably Arabian horses. Even the Queen of Sheba is said to have been here to buy frankincense. Ubar is mentioned in the Bible and the Koran and described as a magnificent city with many columns. The Greek geographer and astronomer Claudius Ptolemy and the Arab historian Mohammad Al Hassan Al Hamdani also reported on the legendary Ubar in their writings. Despite an extensive search, however, the legendary city could not be located for a long time. On the way there, your tour guide will tell you how Ubar was discovered...
Empty Quarter

Now you drive to the place where you can ride the sand dunes in an 4X4 vehicle, climb the dunes yourself, and bask in the beautiful sunset. Be sure that it is a very special and unforgettable experience to see the magical sunset in the desert. Your tour guide will capture this unique moment with photos and videos so you can treasure this experience forever and show your loved ones at home as well. After this adventure you should be hungry and your tour guide will set on the fire and prepare the traditional Omani Barbecue. In the meantime you can smoke shisha and watch the shining stars in the unbelievably clear sky and try to recognise astronomical constellations. Later in the night you can make yourself comfortable in your tent or leave your camp bed outside and sleep under the stars in the fabulous desert of Oman

We will never forget this tour with Qatan and his Landruiser "Franky"... Everything was well organized, from the communication by Kate to the implementation by Qatan. Our guide was super nice, experienced, humorous, open and just wholeheartedly involved. On the way to the Rub al-chali we made great stops that brought us even closer to the country and its people, tasted camel meat (also had it for dinner with rice a la Qatan), saw a wolf, admired animals and nature, made fire out of nothing on the dunes, chatted for hours about everything, enjoyed tea and saw a magnificent starry sky. Great photos in a breathtaking setting round it off. The absolute highlight was Sophie's birthday cake (thanks again to everyone and to you Kate.... simply great) in the morning at sunrise + serenade. Keep your unique and family atmosphere. Shukran... and best wishes Bianca and Frank

Unexpected wonder even though my expectations were very high. Sunset and sunrise leave sensations that are not describable but absolutely to be experienced. The sand slides between your hands and feet as if it were water, does not stick and is thinner than a powder. And all the waves that form on the dunes..... useless to see them in documentaries: your eyes will be the perfect ones to remember emotions. EXPERIENCE TO DO!!!!! Also excellent dinner offered, with also meat of dromedary. Super comfortable desert tents.

Good morning, We had a wonderful desert experience with Mohammed. It’s incredible how much he knows about the desert environment and how he merge with the desert. It seems that he is part of it. He is also very smart, polite and thoughtful… and treat us like friends not like clients. He really made our trip memorable and unique. Beside of this he is a very good sand driver, we learned a lot and admire his personality. Great guy, we are very lucky to get the chance to meet him. We also would like to point out, that Salalah 4 tourist itself has a very good working customer service and special requests and changes are handelt very reliable and friendly ,- our special thanks to Sophie ( German speaking) and Abdul … you have been so helpful and professional!

What an experience! As parents, we were a bit skeptical about booking a tour into the desert at first. But already at the pickup we were surprised with an entertainment program for our three-year-old. Even for us adults there was an equal amount to experience. First a great grocery shopping according to our wishes in Salalah and then we started into the desert. Instead of coming to a tourist camp as expected, an adventurous setup of our small private camp awaited us. Having your own campfire under an incredible starry sky and great conversations were an absolute highlight. We have already done some guided tours here in Salalah, but this one was finally individual and you learned about the true Oman. Any time again! Maintain that authenticity.

At first, we went to shopping to buy foods for BBQ at the local supermarket. After that, we visited frankincense trees and the lost city of Ubar, and went to the desert so that we could be in time for sunset. After exciting 4WD driving off road, we could see the beautiful sunset. It was the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen. Nobody was there, and I could hear only the sound of the wind. I forgot my busy days while I stayed there. Since the campsite was closed due to the off-season, we did camping and BBQ under the cave. It was the first time for us to eat camel meat. It was so delicious than our expectations! My guide Abdul accepted our request willingly to eat camel meat at BBQ. He prepared BBQ for us speedy. We really enjoyed it and laughed a lot through night. Abdul could take us the place wherever we wanted, and calculate time to be able to visit at the best time. Thank you so much for 3 days!!

Amazing experience! We booked a desert tour and we had the chance to sleep with locals and eating amazing traditional food. Our guide was super prepared and told us a lot of interesting facts about the desert/culture and the country as well. Lastly we were impressed by the kindness and hospitality of the company who took care of us till the end of our trip. We definitely recommend to everyone and we’ll definitely book another tour as soon as we come back! Grazie mille ragazzi per la vostra gentilezza e questa fantastica avventura. Carolina and Nicolò

Azuz was an awesome guide - he knew the all best areas to go and was an expert dune basher. He was very knowledgeable of Oman, the desert, and was excellent company while we soaked in the views of the desert. Unfortunately, we had some rain spoil some of our planned activities, but we ended up going to an amazing camp site away from the empty quarter and had a great bbq there. Azuz had all the required equipment for the trip and our party had a great time. Would definitely recommend - ended up with some great photos and a ton of memories. The booking agent was also super helpful. Shout out to Sophie for her help.

Very proffessional and honestly kind guide. He got true love for desert and trips there treat more of a hobby than work (got day job u wouldnt guess :) . Tour itself is really a PRIVATE, u stop where U want and when U want [go earlier , rather than late, its a long drive and time before sunset is precious] Choose the dune U want to set up the camp. And night itself in the desert is a special experience. 10/10 really recommended.
