What To Expect

Day 1: Early in the morning (7am), you will begin the journey towards Chittagong from Dhaka. It will take almost 5 hours to reach the shipbreaking yard area. To make the journey as relaxing as possible, you will, first of all, explore the Golora Mosqum, a mosque that is a few centuries old, along with Panam City and Sonargaow folk and craft museum. Afterward, you will start driving towards the port city of Chittagong. At around 2pm, you will be reaching Vatiary, the area where almost 10 kilometers of the ship graveyard is scattered along the coastline. Depending on the tide, you will explore the shipbreaking area from Bay of Bengal using a lifeboat of a ship, converted into fishing boat. Due to restrictions, you will not go inside the yard on foot, but rather get closer to different ships from the coastal side and explore the different yards from a boat for about an hour or so. Please note that the shipbreaking yard does not have bathroom facilities.  Afterward, you will be exploring ship junk yard and shops where you will find how one of the biggest recycling and reuse of waste materials are done.  In addition to that, you will be taken to a beautiful site atop a nearby hill where you can have an excellent view of the sunset and have a cup of coffee while enjoying the sunset. You will then check into the hotel in Chittagong for an overnight stay (your own expense). Day 2: You will start the Chittagong city tour at 9am and explore the in's and out's of the second biggest city of Bangladesh. The city of Chittagong has the biggest port in the country and has a rich history of the British period. You will explore the World War II cemetery along with number of British Establishments. Then, explore the tomb of Baijeed Bostami, a spiritual man and his turtles feeding. After lunch, you will start your return journey back to Dhaka. Depending on the traffic condition,  you may discover Shalbon Vihara, the left-out of 1000 century old Buddhist Monastery, one of the most important  archaeological sites of the country. You will reach your hotel or the airport in Dhaka at around 7pm, depending on traffic conditions.

We are a group of 5 friends, and we were very well received in Bangladesh by our Guide Ryhan. The 5 days we spent in Dhaka and the tour of Barishal were fantastic and we had unique experiences always accompanied by our Ryhan. The people of Bangladesh are very friendly and welcoming, we love the coexistence. I recommend visiting Bangladesh and recommend booking through Bangladesh Tours. What a wonderful experience. Thanks Ryhan

Leading up to the tour Sajjat communicated very well with us about what to expect and about the arrangements including providing a visa invitation letter. We were met warmly and quickly right at the airport even though we arrived early. Pavel was a very friendly and cool guide. The transportation was comfortable and modern and the driver was skillful and attentive. The meal arrangements were generally very good and restaurants good and the hotel (Wellpark) was very good and in a good location in Chittagong. Deshguri arranged a good guide for the boat tour of the yards. If you are fascinated by this site in bangladesh this is a good tour and you will see plenty of the country as you drive many hours for this tour - but it is a good way to see the country watching out the window. There were also some great cultural stops and sights in addition to the yards.

We started the 2D1N tour from Dhaka towards Chittagong. We visited the Panam City and had lunch at a pit stop. Traffic towards Chittagong was long and slow. Travelers who cannot take long distance trip needs to be aware. We boarded a small boat and went to tour the area of the shipbreaking yard. There wasn't a lot of vessels around during the time of the visit. There was also no opportunity to walk the ground or enter the ships to take photographs. Was told a better time to visit would be February when the tides are lower and we might be able to walk on the ground. At night, we walked around Chittagong area. The following morning, we visited some of the places in Chittagong such as the railway station, a fishery port and market, war cemetery, a Buddhist temple. Before we left Chittagong, we visited the shops that sell items they salvage from the ships. Some of the items were in bad conditions yet there are items that are brand new. A good place to get things at a good price.

  • Once in a Lifetime Visit to the Shipbreaking Yards

I have been fascinated with the ship breaking yards in this part of the world ever since seeing them in documentaries and in photographs on the internet. Given the less than favourable publicity this industry has been given, I began a search for a reliable guide to the ship breaking yards in Chittagong as the highlight of my first visit to Bangladesh. Having read positive reviews about Deshguri Tours on TA, I could not have chanced upon a better team of enterprising and customer-oriented Bangladeshis as guides and ambassadors for their country. RIght from the get-go, Sajjat was prompt with email replies, choices with hotel reservations and with assistance on paperwork to facilitate my tourist visa application with the Bangladesh Embassy in Singapore and all this months before the tour took place. On the evening of my arrival in Dhaka, I was met at the airport by Sajjat himself, who sent me to my hotel. Pavel, who was to be my guide for the next 3 days, met me the following morning for a day tour around Dhaka. Pavel's orientation to Dhaka could not have been more perfect - it was like meeting a friend who was passionate about showing you around his hometown (with the services of a driver!) on your first visit there. Pavel's passion for what he does shows in his sparing no effort in ensuring that all travel arrangements from Dhaka to Chittagong and back went smoothly, right down to food hygiene with the choice of meals, especially to check my over-confidence in trying out all street food! In retrospect, I am most grateful for this as I have returned from this trip safe and sound with absolutely none of the problems (such as those concerning the stomach) and with memories that would last a lifetime! Wishing you both all the best in your tours and in your travels!
