Royal Tombs
Malaʻekula or the Royal Tombs is situated in central Nukuʻalofa in the Kingdom of Tonga . The Kings of Tonga and their very close relatives (wives, husbands, children) are buried there. Those who are a little farther away from the mainline (cousins, nephews, nieces, inlaws) are buried elsewhere, in other chiefly cemeteries. Kings from older times, (i.e. the Tuʻi Tonga dynasty), are mostly buried in the langi in Muʻa. The main royal tombs are located at the Mala'ekula site, which includes the tombs of the first five kings of Tonga: King George Tupou I, King George Tupou II, Queen Salote III , King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV and King George V . Each tomb is adorned with traditional Tongan designs and symbols and is surrounded by a beautifully lawn.

Easy to locate the driver. A little basic transport but this in many respects, added to the charm. Lovely island for which some highlights were covered but the cave visited was excellent. Spectacular cave which we swam in and was a real highlight. Overall we enjoyed this trip.

Novice guide. Very sweet, but didn’t have much to say. I don’t recommend swimming in the cave, as pictured. Not only freezing cold water; bats flying around and popping in the water make it a serious health risk.

My Teta Tours guides, Tapu & Dave (the driver) arrived early and patiently waited for me to check out of my hotel. Their enthusiasm and professional attitudes were evident from the start and they even asked me if I needed anything from the city centre (so they could drive me there) before we drove to the east coast! Talk about fantastic customer service!! A+! Tapu's excellent knowledge of Tongan history was superb and her story-telling about Tongan folklore had me captivated! She answered my many questions and took the time to explain the significance of all the beautiful landmarks we visited. Dave was great too - very kind, patient and drove safely and made sure we could get as close as possible for easier access. He was even kind enough to make a quick non-scheduled stop when I asked him so I could take photos of a stunning beach! I honestly didn't want this tour to end - the Tongan East coast was absolutely stunning, a true paradise with so many interesting people & places to see. And Tapu and Dave made this experience so much more memorable & wonderful. I recommend this tour + company whole-heartedly and I can't wait to come back already!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

Arrived on time and took us to the trip. Needed to confirm the schedule for the day as it was not communicated properly. Rest of the day ran refine and the swim in the underground pool was amazing.

The caves alone were worth the trip. The guide and driver were nice but not overly knowledgeable on the history and communication was a little difficult. But overall worth the money.

Visiting and swimming in Anahulu cave. Guide gave us as much time as we wanted there which made the tour longer and better value for money.

Climbing down in the cave to reach the pool of water and the water itself. Our guide did a really good job of explaining Island life and a about the Kingdom of Tonga.
