Parque Arqueologico Cihuatan
Cihuatán is a pre-Hispanic archaeological site. Its inhabitants are believed to have been indigenous Maya. The structures of the ancient city center, as well as part of the residential area to the south and east of the monumental center, are located in an archaeological park that is co-administered by the Ministry of Culture and the National Archaeological Foundation of El Salvador.
Joya de Ceren Archaeological Park
Joya de Cerén is a Mayan archaeological site dating to the Classic period, located in the district of San Juan Opico, municipality of La Libertad. It was abandoned around 660 AD due to the eruption of the Loma Caldera volcano. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in Mesoamerica because it offers a glimpse into the daily lives of ordinary people. For this reason, it is often called the Pompeii of the Americas.
