El Mirador is a breathtakingly beautiful city with massive buildings. This city precedes others like Tikal by a couple of centuries. El Mirador was discovered less than 100 years ago, and they are still exploring and excavating, it is believed that there are more than 200 small cities around El Mirador that used to be like the suburbs.
Without a doubt, there is much to explore and much to know. A 5-day, 4-night tour sounds a bit challenging, but you will enjoy every step of this tour. The road is flat, and we will walk between 5 to 6 hours a day making stops to rest and eat a snack every two hours. During this adventure, you will visit 3 Mayan cities in total: El Tintal, La Muerta, and El Mirador.
Your visit will also contribute to the Carmelita community. The team that will accompany you throughout the tour is part of a community cooperative, and the proceeds directly help the entire neighborhood. Please note that you will need to make your reservation with 5 days of anticipation.

Flores
This tour will start very early in the morning, at 7:30 am. We will pick you up in the lobby of your hotel in Flores or Santa Elena in the Peten department, and we will go to the community called Carmelita, north of Petén. The road is unpaved, and it will take us approximately 3 and a half hours to arrive. Relax, enjoy the road, and rest while we get there. If you don't want to get up early, we recommend staying at the Carmelita Hotel.
Once we arrive at the community of Carmelita, you will meet the team that will accompany you: the logistics manager, the community guide, the muleteer, and the cooks. Before leaving, you will enjoy a delicious breakfast in a community dining room, and after having recharged energy with the food, we will start our walk. Are you ready for one of the best adventures of your life?
To get to this archaeological site, we will start walking for 3 hours in the middle of the jungle. Then, we will rest for a moment and have lunch in the Guacute or La Florida area, depending on the time of year. We will walk for 3 more hours until we reach our base camp in El Tintal. We hope that when you get to Tintal, you still have energy. If the answer is yes, then we invite you to climb El Henequén pyramid. One of the highlights of this pyramid is that it allows you to have a 360 ° view. You will appreciate the beauty and magnificence of the jungle and in the distance, you will see the archaeological site of El Mirador. At the end of the day, you will want to rest and refresh yourself. The camp has toilets, showers, a kitchen area, a dining room, and the camping houses have mats and sheets. Rest and prepare for day 2.

El Mirador
In the afternoon, we will arrive at La Muerta, a small Mayan city located very close to El Mirador. This city has the oldest emblem glyph (the royal shield) in this Mayan region. After this little visit, we will continue walking for 45 more minutes until we finally reach the Mayan city of El Mirador.
When arriving at El Mirador, you will rest, have dinner, and share mythology stories with the community guide and the other members of the group. We will spend the night in this place and prepare for day 3. If you want to see a beautiful sunset, you can do it on the El Tigre pyramid, which will give you an impressive natural show.

We chose Dynastia Kan because they carried a beautiful community project. But, before leaving we were not told some details that have their importance! Essential: make sure that heavy rains have not turned your trek into a nightmare. Late start and more trail, but mud , water sometimes knee-deep (we were told we were lucky because some days it was under the arms!!!) or more if you fall from the trees that serve as your way! A guide who runs ahead without waiting for you! fortunately the second is very attentive. More than 22kms, 7h30 walk with backpack, and only a small stop of 20' in the day. An arrival at dark night with flashlights and for some of the ticks all over the shoes... 2nd day 23 kms idem when it should have been easier! the Mirador day is great and our little guide less hurried exciting... 2 days, 46 kms to come back, without much interest and tell ourselves, exhausted, that we prefer treks at high altitude...

With almost no reviews online, this is my honest experience of the Guat2Do Mirador Trek. Guat2Do organizes this trek through the Carmelita Mirador Cooperative, which uses local guides and supports the community. As such, it may be less-than full-service compared to other companies The trek experience was for the most part as advertised on TripAdvisor with two notable exceptions, which is why I can only give it 3 stars. If I had asked the right questions I might have alleviated the biggest problem- my guide didn't speak a word of English and I don't speak Spanish except at a very basic tourist level. There was one other traveler on the trek who also didn't speak Spanish, so there was almost no translation help. Another trekking service offers a guide AND a translator. We somehow made it work over 5 days, but missed out on much of the knowledge the guide had to offer. Our guide Ambrosio can't be faulted and he tried his best. There were some last minute scheduling changes (see more) but I was told there would be an English speaking guide the day prior. That was not the case. I can guess maybe why, but will never know. The second problem is that the cancellation policy on TripAdvisor says 24 hours prior for full refund- that is not true. Guat2ToDo told me 15 days minimum. As a solo traveler, I wanted to go ONLY if there were others on my trip- that fell apart at the last second when the other trekkers changed dates. To be fair, Guat2Go doesn't guarantee anything but the trek and guide service. Instead of traveling all alone I decided to move dates to what I thought was a larger group, instead of cancelling (my first instinct) with no refund. That turned out to be just one other trekker. The trek description does not guarantee an English-speaking guide, but again, this should have been stated clearly in the description, especially knowing I was from America. Also, plan on carrying extra water and snacks, as this is basically an unsupported hike until you get to the campsites. To be fair, Guat2Do would have taken me alone with the guide on the original date as agreed If I desired, for the agreed upon price. Make sure you have all your questions answered beforehand, especially if you are an English-only speaker.
