Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress

Sigiriya, an ancient rock fortress and former royal palace, is one of Sri Lanka's most visited and best-known sights, attracting just more than one million visitors in 2019. But on this sunny day in May 2021, my partner and I were the only two people there. Dating back to 477 AD, Sigiriya is considered one of South Asia's best-preserved examples of urban planning and one of its most important archaeological sites. The elaborate palace and its towering construction on top of the rock, as well as its risqué artwork, resulted in its 1982 listing as a Unesco World Heritage Site. However, its ingenious garden and water systems at the foot of the rock are what make it a national treasure.

Dambulla Cave Temple

ocated in central Sri Lanka, the Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple is a living Buddhist site that is focused on a series of five cave shrines. Inhabited by forest-dwelling Buddhist monks since the 3rd century BCE, these natural caves have been transformed continuously throughout the historical period into one of the largest and most outstanding Buddhist complexes in the Southern and South Eastern Asian region, showcasing innovative approaches to interior layout and decoration. In keeping with a longstanding tradition associated with living Buddhist ritual practices and continuous royal patronage, the cave shrines underwent several renovation and refurbishing programmes before assuming their present interior forms in the 18th century. The vast internal spaces of the cave shrines are not compartmentalized, but are spatially differentiated by a deliberate and subtle arrangement of polychrome sculpture of exceptional craftsmanship and decorated with brilliant compositions of mural paintings.

Although it may have had some Indian influence, it is a structure that is more or less unique to the architecture of ancient Sri Lanka. Vatadages were built around small stupas for their protection, which often enshrined a relic or were built on hallowed ground. Circular in shape, they were commonly built of stone and brick and adorned with elaborate stone carvings. Vatadages may have also had a wooden roof, supported by a number of stone columns arranged in several concentric rows

Had the most amazing honeymoon in Sri Lanka where we spent 16 days. Indika was our driver throughout our trip and he really helped make our holiday an unforgettable experience. He was very informative and very easy to understand. He showed his passion and love of his country and was our own personal tour guide. We booked our holiday through Olanka Travels and Indika drove us to each part of the itinerary and even added some additional activities that were not previously included as he said we'd enjoy them which we were really grateful for. He brought us to the restaurants we wanted to visit and also gacve us his personal recommendations for where we could get local food which were all great. Indika personal connections also greatly helped us on our trip, the guide he recommended us using was fantastic and helped us see a leopard in person which was a highlight of the trip. Would recommend anyone looking for a tour guide/driver to use Indika.

Indika was our english speaking private guide and driver for our 16 day tour. He had us emerged into the Sri Lankan culture quickly and had us leaving with a greater understanding of his country, its physical atmosphere, people, and social climate. Indika was prompt, kind, knowledge, flexible (always reviewing or revising the next days program), and went out of his way to accommodate our needs. If I return to Sri Lanka, I would definitely use Indika again.

We have just got home after a great 14 day tour around Sri Lanka. Indika was our safe and capable driver and he was very knowledgeable about his country and its history. He went out of our way to help us enjoy the trip and we would highly recommend him. Our favourite places were the Sigiriya Rock fortress and Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella and Galle. Several times whilst driving around we came across an elephant on the road and at one hotel we sat on the veradah while monkeys were swinging from the trees around us which we thought was amazing. Thanks for making our trip so memorable Indika and if we got the chance to visit Sri Lanka again we would certainly book you again.

I took a 11 day tour around Sri Lanka with a friend. I had already pre-planned where i wanted to travel and stay. Our driver and guide, Indika planned the route and tour. He was very professional and spoke great English and was very knowledgeable to the customs and history of Sri Lanka. Although we had some ideas of what we wanted to do, Indika had also made some great suggestions such as afternoon tea at the Grand Hotel in Nuwara Eliya which was beautiful. Indika drove us around the country including Sigiriya, Ella, Passikudah, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Yala and Bentota. He also joined us on some of the tours such as the safari in Yala. I recommend staying in Cinnamon Wild it was an amazing experience. At night we had a wild elephant that walked through the hotel. We had a few issues with our hotels and Indika was patient and helped us sort any issues. Considering we went at a time where there were some political issues, Indika was always at hand to keep us safe and update us if plans needed to change. We stayed at some amazing hotels in Sri Lanka which i recommend including, Amaya Beach Hotel, Passikudah, Cinnamon Bentota Beach, Amaya Hllls, Kandy. Overall i recommend a trip to Sri lanka and would allow up to 10 days if you would like to travel and see the country.
