The Urubu River is a tributary of the great Amazon River, and lies to the east of Manaus. It is almost 500 km/310 miles long, and is the narrowest river we travel on – it is the perfect width to experience the real rainforest at your fingertips.

Few people live on this exciting river and you will enjoy peaceful days without seeing or hearing much of humanity at all. The predominantly gentle current will aid you in your journey downstream, although you may also have the chance to shoot some safe but exciting rapids.

Kayaking is the perfect way to experience this beautiful, mystical river before mass tourism discovers it!

It is always necessary to be attentive to be able to see animals, the most common ones to be seen are: monkeys, sloths, caimans, macaws and other birds, but if we are lucky, the Urubu river is also home to anacondas and otters and other more skittish animals . .We will continue by kayak to our next camping point which is close to the waterfall that crosses the Urubu river, the "Iracema falls".

44 km per day by kayak Sunrise and sunset in the Amazon are around 6:00 am and 6:00 pm respectively. The combination of the yellow, orange and reddish colors in the sky filtered by the greens and browns of the forest and blending with the dark waters of the river is enchanting. It can be one of the most beautiful images the Amazon has to offer. The sounds of the birds and animals waking up or settling down for the night complement this unique atmosphere. On this day we will have an opportunity to visit the locals and learn a lot of traditional knowledge. The options like fishing and nightspot are good for this day.

28 km per day by kayak Onward as we descend the river, and some stops to refresh. Our camp will be at a place called "Praia do Amigos", a small isolated strip of sand, excellent for relaxing and bathing in the river. The options like fishing and nightspot are good for this day. Obs: Fishing and caiman-spotting are dependent on the season. Specifically, the low-water season (September - February) provides better chances to encounter these animals, while at high water the rivers (and the aquatic fauna) spread into the flooded forest, making them harder to find.

A Remarkable Jauaperi River Experience with Erikes and Amazon Mystery Tours We had the pleasure of being guided by Erikes & his associate Gil during our 10-day kayak trip on the Jauaperi River with Amazon Mystery Tours. An unforgettable experience! This wasn't just a tour, it was an immersive journey of discovery. Erikes is incredibly passionate about the region, and his deep knowledge of this wildlife ecosystem, flora and local culture truly enriched our journey. The true remoteness of the Jauaperi River allowed us to connect completely with the natural beauty of this Amazon tributary. Days passed with seeing only an occasional local fishing boat, creating an authentic wilderness experience. Despite being deep in the Amazon, we enjoyed delicious meals throughout our journey, including freshly caught local fish grilled over open flames. We slept in hammocks with integrated mosquito nets surrounded by the jungle's nocturnal symphony. The wildlife encounters exceeded our expectations. We observed giant river otters, pink river dolphins, howler monkeys and a breathtaking array of birdlife including vibrant toucans, macaws, and the prehistoric-looking hoatzins. For anyone considering an Amazon Basin kayak adventure, we wholeheartedly recommend both Erikes and Amazon Mystery Tours for an unforgettable wilderness experience. The combination of expert guiding, immersive wildlife encounters, and genuine passion has set a high standard for all our future adventures.

  • Kayaking the Urubu River

I just returned from a five day kayak trip on the Urubu River with my guide Erikes and his logistics guy, Joo. It took me a while to set up the trip due to some personal issues but Suelen was very patient and helpful in answering all of my e-mails. The days consisted of a few hours kayaking which, because the water was particularly low, involved quite a bit of whitewater, although it was mostly simple to paddle through. Once we had to portage over rapids and a couple to times we had to get into the water to guide our kayaks through rocky areas. At one point I nearly got tossed from my boat and although I managed to right myself on my own, Erikes was right there ready to pull me to safety. Once a day we'd stop for a nice lunch which Joo would have waiting for us and either he or Erikes would usually string up a hammock for me to take a nap. Then back in the kayaks until we reached the camp for the night. Occasionally we'd have a hike, including one where there was an incredible waterfall that you could refresh yourself under. I'm an early riser so I saw a couple of sunrises. The food was quite good. Breakfast was usually eggs, some kind of tapioca pastry, meat, cheese and coffee. Lunch and dinner usually included rice, beans, manioc topping and one or more proteins, including chicken, beef, fish, sausage and barbecued spare ribs. There was plenty of cold water and occasionally some very welcome fruit juice as well as beer which goes down great on a hot muggy day. Back in Manaus we stopped at Erikes' home where his family was having a barbecue and I was given some of the best beef skewers I've ever had. Best part of the trip: Few, if any, mosquitos on this part of the Amazon! I got a couple of bites only on one day but they may have been from ants or other bugs.
